Clerics, civil society role counted for peace in Muharram

MULTAN - Clerics from all schools of thoughts and civil society must stand shoulder to shoulder with the government against terrorism and extremism.
Punjab CM’s coordinator on interfaith harmony Alhaj Habib Ullah Bhatti stated a meeting held here in connection with upcoming month of Muharram on Tuesday. He said that the clerics have a key role in maintaining peace in the society. He stressed upon the clerics and citizens to set aside their religious biases and unite at one platform for the sake of peace in the country. He declared that fool proof security arrangements are being made by the government for Muharram.
He warned that internal and external enemies were bent upon weakening the foundations of the country and the motherland needed support from the nation. He said that the government strictly implemented National Action Plan which resulted into clear decline in terrorism.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Abdul Ghaffor Rashid said that the platform of Ittehad Bainul Muslimeen offers space to clerics from all sects to disseminate the message of peace. He urged upon the clerics to exhibit utmost religious tolerance during Moharram.
Ali Raza Gardezi asked the clerics to become the ambassadors of peace instead of the ambassadors of their own sects. He said that it was the only way to end differences. Faroo Khan Saeedi said that Islam gave the message of tolerance and all out efforts would be made to maintain peace.
Other clerics including Allama Inayat Ullah Rehmani, Abdul Haq Mujahid, Ayub Moghal, Mazhar Gillani, Shafqat Bhutta, Khurshid Abbas Gardezi and Khalid Mahmood Nadem assured the district administration of their full support for peace in their speeches.
Earlier, the DCO said that the district government had full support from the clerics and civil society. He declared that the security would be put on red alert on 9th and 10th Muharram while army could also be called if needed. He said that the district police had been issued order to check and clear the routes of mourning processions.
