PPP has nothing for Jiyalas on its 44th founding day

Pakistan Peoples Party courageously survived assassinations of its two great leaders in over four decades but now it is on the verge of loosing its charm and power as it approaches to observe the 44th Founding Day. In Sindh no body had ever challenged the party after Zulfikar Ali Bhutto founded it with all leftist rhetoric. However, one ordinary incident in Dadu reflects the mood in the interior of Sindh and erosion of the partys appeal to the masses. No one could ever even in its nightmare think of a PPP prime minister barracked booed and shouted down by the hardcore PPP Jiyalas in Dadu recently. Prime Minister Gilani who wore the mantle of stalwarts like ZA Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma BB faced the anger and disenchantment when he was confronted by the select corps of Jiyalas who refused to listen to him when he spoke to the flood affectees. This incident could be the beginning of an end of a party which had challenged army generals and its political opponents with gut and courage. Recent flood played havoc in Dadu and its adjoining areas, which are still under water. The government machinery as well as the elected representatives have failed to provide relief to the affected people all loyalists of PPP. Vernacular dailies are replete with reports of malfeasance and misfeasance and embezzlement in the distribution of relief goods. Deserving peoples are running from pillar to post to get ration and Watan Cards while undeserving and blue-eyed of powerful and influential are enjoying the bounties. Protest demonstrations by flood affectees against denial of relief goods are being held every day in the interior of the province but the Government has turned its eye blind towards their plight. During the visit of Prime Minister Gilani to Dadu, it was reported in the media that huge quantity of relief goods including ration items, which were stored in a school, were thrown in garbage dump instead of giving to the deserving. This single incident spoke volume of inefficiency and callousness of the elected representatives towards their electorates, who voted them into power. Now winter season has multiplied the miseries of flood affected people living in the camps and in their destroyed home surrounded by floodwaters. Political observers said that PPP is facing worst ever crisis in its history and the Gilani-led government is pursuing unpopular policies which have pushed the party in alienation. Law and order situation in the interior, which is worsening with each passing day, has created difficulties for the NGOs especially foreigners, in distribution of relief goods. Dacoits flushed out from the hideouts in jungle because of floods operating in towns and cities where rule of law is misnomer. Members of Parliament, instead of visiting their constituencies, are enjoying luxurious life in their cosy houses in posh localities. Army of ministers and advisors has its own priorities. The senior leadership has no argument to defend the government policies. However, they have shifted this responsibility to Advisor Information Sindh Ms. Sharmila Farooqui to face the music and a hostile media. Though the young lady playing on an unsafe pitch is seen standing her ground and defend the policies of the government. Parachuters are ruling the roost while the committed and diehard and old guards have been sidelined, sarcastically comments senior PPP workers who have borne the brunt of dictatorship. They are of the view that these new entrants, who are now calling shots, would leave the party like rats leave the sinking ship, if testing time came. Citing example of 1977 when the first elected government of late Z.A Bhutto was toppled by the military dictator, the time servers had left the party. It was the motherly leadership of Begum Nusrat Bhutto, which steered the party from morass and the party challenged the dictator during 1983 MRD movement under the leadership of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. All this is history and the new PPP leadership supported by scores of cronies and flatterers has no clue how to handle the situation or to serve the people who had always stood the test of the time and shed their blood for the cause of party. Alienation among Jiyalas against the present leadership is growing and it is expected that instead of fighting for them they would rather lie low and wait for a new leadership to emerge to raise the stock and popularity of the party. The PPP is on the brink of a disaster and there is no leadership worth its name that can pull the party back from the edge.
