15 drown as van plunges into canal

KHAIRPUR – Fifteen people including five women and four children drowned Wednesday in Shikarpur when a passenger van fell into a canal.
The van was going to GoloDaro from Gharhi Yasin when the driver lost control and it plunged into Kirthar Canal, drowning at least 15 people.
The rescue workers pulled 15 bodies from the water while nine people were saved.
The local administration shifted the rescued passengers and deceased to hospitals in Gharihi Yasin and Shikarpur.
The Shikarpur deputy commissioner confirmed the death of 15 people.
Sindh Local Government Minister Agha Siraj Durrani told reporters that seven people were still believed to be in the water and the district administration was trying to retrieve them. He said that he had directed the health EDO and the commissioner deputy to monitor the rescue operation and facilitate the affected people.
The minister said that he would ask the Sindh chief minister to announce compensation for victims.
