Islamabad - Gen Zubair Mahmood Hayat yesterday assumed command as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) at a ceremony held at the joint staff headquarters in Rawalpindi.
General Hayat, who has become the 17th CJCSC of Pakistan, was presented with a guard of honour at a ceremony attended by all chiefs of staff, including outgoing army chief Gen Raheel Sharif. Incoming army chief Gen Qamar Javad Bajwa was also present on the occasion.
The outgoing chairman General Rashad Mehmood handed over the bat to the new CJCSC.
The CJCSC is also the deputy chairman of NCA’s deployment committee, which is headed by the prime minister.
Gen Zubair is a second generation officer. His father retired as a major general, while two of his brothers are generals — Pakistan Ordnance Factories Wah Chairman Lt Gen Omar Hayat and Inter-Services Intelligence DG (Analysis) Maj Gen Ahmad Mahmood Hayat.
Gen Zubair Hayat is from the artillery and was serving as Chief of General Staff (CGS) prior to taking over as CJCSC.
On the other hand, the Change of Command ceremony for the chief of army staff will take place in Rawalpindi today. Outgoing army chief General Raheel Sharif will hand over the command to the newly-appointed army chief Lt-Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa.
In a tweet, ISPR refuted the news about other appointments in the military. Earlier, unconfirmed reports on different media channels said that Corps Commander Southern Command Lt-Gen Amir Riaz had been appointed as Chief of General Staff (CGS) to fill the vacant post, while Military Secretary Lt Gen Shahid Baig Mirza had been made Corps Commander Southern Command. ISPR said that information would be made available when the new appointments take place.
Gen Raheel’s farewell

The outgoing army chief General Raheel Sharif yesterday paid farewell calls on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and President Mamnoon Hussain here.
At the PM House meeting, the prime minister praised General Raheel for his valuable services rendered as army chief and extended his best wishes for his post-retirement life and happiness for his family, a statement issued by the PM’s Office said.
In the President House meeting, President Mamnoon Hussain eulogised the professionalism and preparedness of Pakistan Army and said that the defence of the country is in safe and capable hands.
The president paid glowing tribute to General Raheel Sharif for his invaluable services in curbing the menace of extremism and terrorism through operation Zarb-e-Azb and restoration of law and order in all parts of the country.
He said that the professional and leadership qualities of General Raheel as army chief will always be remembered.
General Raheel Sharif thanked the President for his guidance and support in discharge of his official responsibilities.
