LAHORE Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) organised a media discussion titled 'Violence against children and role of media at a local hotel here on Monday. In a presentation by SPARC, the worst situation towards child rights in Pakistan was highlighted which showed that in year 2009, about 2012 causes of sexual abuse against children were filed. According to the presentation 81 per cent accused were closely related to the victim children including relatives, teachers and member of peer group. On the occasion, Provincial Program Officer SPARC Sahiba Irfan said the basic reasons behind violence against child in the country were poverty, lack of awareness about child rights and insufficient laws. She said there is a dire need to form strict laws so that the child rights could be saved and the violence including corporal punishment, child militancy, child trafficking, pornography and early age marriages could be eradicated. Appreciating the role of media in highlighting the issue, the participants said the role of media is commendable as it could be seen in case of Sailkot incident. They were of the view that the media, as an opinion builder, was not only creating awareness among the masses but also activating the civil society, concerning NGOs and parents and the government on the child related issues.
