More than 4,500 appear in tests for MBBS admission

KARACHI - The Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) on Sunday conducted entrance test at Ojah Campus, in which as many as 4,693 candidates appeared to seek admission to first year MBBS/BDS (2011/2012) programme. The test was conducted by the National Testing Service (NTS) under strict surveillance of the Police and Rangers personnel. The entrance test was held to give admissions in the category of open merit and UEDP local for MBBS at Dow Medical College (DMC), Sindh Medical College (SMC) and BDS at Dr Ishratul Ebad Institute of Oral Health Sciences (DIKIOHS). The NTS has charged Rs900 per candidate from the administration of DUHS for the conduct of the test, TheNation learnt. The DUHS has allocated 700 seats for the MBBS Programme for 2012 and 100 seats for BDS Programme; in response to the available seats 5,000 candidates were enrolled while 307 candidates were absent in the pre-admission entry test. DUHS Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Ummer Farooq looked after the test as Chairman Admission Committee. Not a single mishap was reported during the test, which was witnessed from the huge participation of candidates and their parents. The test was commenced on the given time at 10am and ended at 12noon. As per seats allocation policy, as many as 700 seats were allocated for MBBS Programme, out of which 456 seats were reserved for general merit at DMC (228) and SMC (228), 55 self-finance seats at DMC for local candidates and 46 at SMC, 45 seats are reserved for candidates from interior at DMC (22) and SMC (23), two seats at SMC for candidates from Balochistan, two seats for disabled candidates, one each at DMC and SMC, 16 seats for foreign national students on self-finance basis, 46 seats for Overseas Pakistani Candidates, 28 each at DMC and SMC on-self finance basis and 32 seats are designated for Pakistan Technical Assistant Programme at SMC. On the other hand, out of total 100 BDS seats, 60 are reserved for general merit, 34 for self-finance local candidates and six for overseas candidates on self-finance basis. It is pertinent to mention here that 20 seats have also been reserved at LUMS and People Medical College Nawabsah for candidates belonging to Karachi, while two seats for Karachiites are reserved at Bolan Medical College Quetta.
