NWA jirga asks govt for early repatriation of TDPs

LAKKI MARWAT - A tribal jirga of North Waziristan Agency has asked the government to accelerate the process of repatriation of the temporarily displaced persons to their hometowns.
They also asked the government to focus on the rehabilitation of damaged infrastructures, houses and business centres in the tribal region.
The jirga met here at Children Park outside the town hall building in Lakki city on Thursday. Elders from different tribes were present to discuss problems faced by the temporarily displaced tribesmen and to press the government for their solution.
The repatriation process is going on at snail’s pace and the authorities should accelerate it to ensure repatriation of TDPs to their hometowns on daily basis with dignity,” said Malik Salam Rehman.
He said that the quick repatriation would help to bring normalcy to the tribal region, which had been cleared of militants groups by Pak army.
He also urged the government to ensure transparent distribution of rations and disbursement of cash assistance among the displaced and affected tribesmen.
Criticising the role of non-governmental organisations in extending assistance to the tribal people, another tribal chief Malik Meenazar said that the humanitarian organisations had ignored the affected tribesmen staying in Lakki Marwat district.
He said that elders were justified to criticize non-governmental bodies for not paying any heed to the problems faced by affected tribesmen.
“After successful operation Zerb-e-Azb the political administration should resettle the tribal people in their localities and initiate practical measures for improving health, education and other basic facilities,” he added.
He also asked the government to continue provision of rations and financial assistance to the tribal people up to three years after their settlement in their native towns.
“The tribal people do not want parks and sports grounds rather the political authorities should rebuilt their destroyed houses, business outlets and health and educational institutions”, the tribal chiefs said.
They also said that they would not accept FATA reforms and amendments in FCR without being consulted by government.
