Altaf’s speech regrettable, says Khurshid

ISLAMABAD - Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Khurshid Shah yesterday said the Pakistan People’s Party will never compromise on the motherland’s integrity, adding Muttahida Qaumi Movement Chief Altaf Hussain’s slogans were unacceptable.

Speaking to journalists here, Shah said the MQM leader’s speech was regrettable as no Pakistan could even think of raising slogans against the country.

Earlier yesterday, a treason case against Altaf Hussain and other MQM leaders for raising anti-Pakistan slogans was lodged. The case has been filed under the provisions of Pakistan Penal Court at Artillery Maidan Police Station.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan contacted senior British officials and demanded action against Altaf Hussain’s derogatory speeches that sparked strife in Karachi. He alleged the MQM chief was using British land to provoke hostility in Pakistan.

Rangers had taken MQM’s Farooq Sattar, Khawaja Izharul Hassan, Aamir Liaquat and Amir Khan into custody after violent MQM workers clashed with police and surrounded the office of a private news channel in Karachi by taking down the gate of Madina Mall and broke the windows of the building.

Later, Altaf Hussain apologised to Army Chief General Raheel Sharif and Director General Rangers Major General Bilawal Akbar for his anti-Pakistan speech.

In a statement issued from London, Hussain asked for forgiveness from the army and Rangers chiefs. “From the depth of heart, I beg pardon for my remarks against Pakistan, the establishment including General Raheel Sharif and DG Rangers,” the MQM chief said.

Also yesterday, MQM leader Farooq Sattar told a news conference that the party will not accept anti-Pakistan slogans from Altaf Hussain or anybody else. PPP leader Khurshid Shah said the British High Commissioner must be summoned to record protest against the use of their soil against Pakistan. He said no party could accept anti-Pakistan slogans as “it is only because of Pakistan that we are doing politics.”

He said there were several good leaders among the MQM ranks but Altaf Hussain was damaging his own party. “Even the good workers are being maligned due to his statements. We must not allow anyone to play with the sentiments of the nation,” he added.
