Gasline project nearing completion: Tehran

LAHORE - Governor, Iranian province of Khorasan-Razavi, Dr Mahmoud Salahi said on Tuesday that Pak-Iran gas pipeline project was nearing its completion and work on remaining 80 kilometer from Pak-Iran border was in progress. While addressing a news conference at a local hotel alongwith Punjab Minister for Food Ch Abdul Ghafoor, he said that Iran was aware of the problems facing Pakistan including its energy needs; and was ready to extend all out cooperation to the brotherly Islamic country in this regard. He said MoUs were also being signed with Punjab government to extend cooperation in the fields of agriculture, dairy farming and energy. He said talks were underway between representatives of Iranian power generation companies and Punjab government to work out modalities of cooperation in energy sector. He said Punjab government could benefit from expertise of Iranian engineers in respect of construction of hydel power projects . Salahi said Iran was producing surplus electricity, and obviously there was no loadshedding in his country. He said Iran was willing to help Punjab in value-addition of its different products, and also wanted to import surplus meat from Punjab, as it was already importing mango and citrus from Pakistan. Replying to a question, Dr. Salahi said it was right of every nation to benefit from science and technology and it was under this right that Iran was struggling to become an atomic power. Urging cooperation between Iran, Pakistan and Turkey, he said these countries could set an unprecedented example of unity and cooperation in the world. He said both Iran and Pakistan were victims of terrorism and they should work together to curb this menace. To a question about recent US intervention in Pakistan, Salahi said no country had the right to transgress sovereignty of any other country on any pretext. Earlier, while talking to faculty members of Punjab University, the Governor of Iranian province said that big powers always created problems for the people of developing countries and imposed wars on them. He said Pakistan, Iran and Turkey, if united, could undo their nefarious plans. He said the three countries should show unity to ouster the enemy from the region, adding that destruction of Afghanistan was 'our destruction. He said all the countries should focus on their own development and desist from interfering in other countries affairs. Punjab province and Lahore were known for seats of learning and culture, he added. Paying tributes to Poet of the East, Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, he said the two great personalities were held in high esteem in Iran. He said he had cherished a desire to offer Fateha at Iqbals mausoleum for the last 26 years which had now been fulfilled. Other members of his delegation from Iranian Province of Khorasan-Razavi also accompanied him during his visit to Punjab University. He also met Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran and senior faculty members at the university campus. In the end, souvenirs were presented to the honorable guests while Governor Khorasan presented a gift of 'Shahnama-e-Firdousi to the Vice Chancellor. Late, the delegation visited Iranian section of universitys main library and announced gift of books worth 50 lakh Taman.
