SRINAGAR (Reuters) Four Indian soldiers and 10 freedom fighters were killed in clashes in Kashmir, the highest number of people killed in firefights in 24 hours in recent months, the army said on Thursday. The Indian army says Pakistan-based groups have stepped up efforts to infiltrate the region after snow started melting on the high mountain passes. On Wednesday, four Indian soldiers and four freedom fighters were killed in a gunbattle in the Rajouri district. Indian army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Biplab Nath said on Thursday that six fighters were killed in another fierce encounter in Rajouri. At the weekend troops shot dead six Mujahideen as they tried to cross into India, the third such infiltration attempt to be foiled in a week, the army said.
