Protest against move to amend blasphemy law tomorrow

LAHORE - Leaders of various religious parties on Wednesday said Governor Salmaan Taseer had committed blasphemy by calling the Blasphemy Law as cruel and a case should be registered against him on this charge. At a meeting under the auspices of Muttahida Tehrik-i-Khatam-i-Nabuwat Rabita Committee, they decided to hold protest rallies on Friday to express their opposition to any move to amend the Blasphemy Law, and to declare that residences of parliamentarians proposing amendments to the said law would be besieged. Syed Ataul Mohaiman Bokhari (Majlis Ahrar-i-Islam) presided over the meeting which was attended by Maulana Zahidur Rashedi (Pakistan Shariat Council), Maulana Abdul Maalik Khan, Dr Farid Paracha (Jamaat-i-Islami), Maulana Amir Hamza (Tehrik-i-Hurmat Rasool), Maulana Amjad Khan (JUI-F), Hafiz Abdul Ghaffar Ropri (Jamaat Ahle Hadith Pakistan), Maulana Abdur Rauf Farooqi (JUI-S), Maulana Shamsur Rehman Moavia (Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat) and many others. The participants said that the Punjab governors conduct in the case against Aasia Masih amounted to hurting the sentiments of Muslims and violating the Constitution and law. Reiterating that they would not tolerate any change to the Blasphemy law, the participants called upon the ulema and khateebs to condemn the governor in their sermons. A three-member committee was constituted to decide out practical steps to restrain the government from taking any measures against the public sentiments. They alleged that the government was working on the foreign agenda to have the Blasphemy Laws changed.
