Karachi continues to bleed; 10 more dead

KARACHI - As many as 10 people were killed and 21 others injured in separate incidents of violence in different part of the city on Friday. Two more persons were killed on Friday in Godhrra Camp area of New Karachi where an armed clash between two religious groups on Thursday left four persons, including a woman, killed and 12 others injured. A woman injured in the clash on Thursday also succumbed to her injuries. Exchange of fire continued in the area on Friday creating tension and panic among the dwellers. Heavy contingent of police have been deployed in the area to bring the situation under control. The police have also taken into custody 25 persons belonging to both the groups. According to the details, the clash started in over the construction of a mosque by a defunct organisation. Residents of the area said that banded outfit Jamat-ud-Dawa operatives have bought a house and started their activities. On Thursday, they started converting the house into a mosque upon which the residents of the area approached the police in an effort to restrict the activities of the banded outfit. Clash occurred when activists of Sunni Tehreek (ST) along with the residents rushed to the under-construction mosque and demanded to stop the construction. Both groups started firing on each other which resulted in the death of Mohsin, 35, while exchange of fire left 13 more wounded. The injured included Jamila, 70, Aurangzaib, Umar Hammad, Muhammad Haris, Kamran, Babar, Rehan Qadri, Muhammad Nadir, Usman Atari, Maulana Nazir Ahmad, Mujeeb Ahmad and Arif. On Friday, the routine and commercial activities remained suspended in Godhra Camp area. The most affected area was Sector 11-G, Godhra Camp, from where the deadly violence broke out on Thursday evening. In another incident, unidentified armed assailants gunned down two persons and critically injured another near Sindhi Hotel in New Karachi. In Nazimabad area, a government servant was shot dead by unidentified men. The police recovered bullet-riddled body of an unidentified person spotted by locals from Malir. Three motorcyclists kidnapped a man, shoot him dead and dumped the body by roadside in Kharadar area. A bullet-riddled body also bearing torture marks was recovered from Khadda Market locality of Liyari. Meanwhile two persons whose identity has not been ascertained were killed in separate firing incidents in Shah Faisal Colony and Gulistan-e-Joher areas. The incidents of violence have paralysed the route life and commercial activities in the city. Citizens hesitate to visit markets and picnic points. The citizens have expressed their grave concern over surge in crimes and violence. They were of the view that violence in Karachi, which is an industrial hub and supporting millions of people from across the country, directly affects overall economic situation of the country. The citizens termed the lawless in the city as a conspiracy to weaken the base of countrys economy and demanded the federal and provincial governments and authorities concerned take solid steps for bringing the situation under control. They also demanded the launch of a grand operation to free the city of gangsters and arms.
