MQM wants removal of Sindh top cops

KARACHI - The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Friday demanded the government to immediately remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Salahuddin Babar Khattak and Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Waseem Ahmed for allegedly patronising drug mafia, land mafia and underworld. Peace in Karachi cannot be restored without thwarting drug mafia, land mafia, criminals and underworld, Mohammad Anwar, MQM London-based member of its Rabita Committee said in a hurriedly-called telephonic Press conference here on Friday night. MQM Rabita Committee Deputy Convenor Dr Farooq Sattar, Provincial Ministers Sagheer Ahmed and Raza Haroon were present at Karachi Press Club where the telephonic press conference was held. MQM London-based members Anees Ahmed Advocate, Saleem Shahzad, and Mustafa Azizabadi also spoke from London office of the muttahida. The Prime Minister was given wrong briefings on law and order situation. IG Sindh and CCPO Karachi also misled high-ups in the briefing, said Mohammad Anwar. The MQM leaders warned that they would not tolerate operation against licensed arms of Karachiites. They said that Karachiites bought licensed arms on MQM appeal because of threats from Taliban, underworld, criminal mafia and land mafia. In the name of de-weaponisation, they want to render Karachiites defenceless and it is unacceptable, Waseem Ahmed warned. He said that land mafia killed innocent persons and also injured Pakistan Rangers and Sindh Police personnel but no action was taken against them. He said that terrorists occupied flats of Urdu speaking owners in Al-Asif Square. He said that weapons were piled up in Quaidabad, Banaras, Sherpao Colony, Sohrab Goth and Lyari but no operation was launched against them. He said that dacoit Rehman extorted money and held Lyari hostage but he was not arrested so far. Instead of bringing criminals to book, they are implicating MQM on ethnic grounds. It is unfair and unacceptable, he said, adding that all this was aimed at launching crackdown on the MQM. We warn you no conspiracy will succeed. MQM survived all your machinations in the past, they said. On the occasion, Anees Ahmed Advocate clarified that MQM was not giving an ultimatum to the government but it wants that provincial and federal governments must pay attention to our demand. We expect that President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani will our meet demands in reciprocation to our unconditional support to them, he said. However, he made clear that next time the Rabita Committee will announce its course of action instead of ultimatum if the genuine demands were not accepted. He said that MQM supporters and workers were also murdered in Qasba and Aligarh colonies. Should we observe black day and call for strike every year to protest against the massacre of Muhajirs, he asked. Referring to the strike call given by the ANP on May 12, he said that every body knows about the culprits involved in the 12 May mayhem, saying: You have seen the pictures of culprits carrying the flag of a party which now has given the strike call. They said MQM Chief Altaf Hussain has discussed the issue with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, saying that the Prime Minister had assured him that his MQM concerns in this context would be removed.
