Five dead in suicide attack on Swabi police

SWABI Five people, including two suicide bombers, were killed while 10 people were injured in the first-ever suicide attack in the district when the Shahmansoor Police Line was targeted here on Monday. According to details, two suicide bombers blew themselves up outside the Police Line at 8.45 a.m. during rush hours when schools and offices were opened and there was a great hustle and bustle on roads. At that important area of the district, not only the Police Line, Swabi Judicial Complex and District Nazim Office are situated but the offices of the education department, District Accounts Office and Excise and Taxation are also present there. DIG Mardan, Abdullah Khan and other police officials told the media after their visit to the Police Line that it was claimed at the initial stage that the number of the suicide bombers was four but later, when he attended the funeral of the two policemen in the judicial complex the latest investigations revealed that their number was two. They first killed the policeman on duty at the main entrance gate and then moved to the Police Line where the man on duty was already alerted, he said, adding that as the suicide bombers moved forward to the Police Line the second man on duty opened fire at them. One of the two suicide bombers was providing the firing cover while the other wanted to enter the Police Line. Later, one of the two blasted himself at the entrance of the Police Line and the other continued firing, he said. However, the other policeman at the entrance gate of the Police Line sacrificed his life and did not allow the suicide bomber to enter there. The suicide bomber who was firing in all directions was in white clothes. When I saw him I opened fire at him and he retaliated my fire, said Anwar Ali, a police constable. If the suicide bomber succeeded to enter the Police Line it might have resulted in the killings of many policemen and officials, said Mr Abdullah Khan. It has been learnt that about 60 policemen and officials were present in the Police Line when the suicide bomber targeted it. Some policemen had already left for their duties to difference offices. Officials said that the suicide blast was so server that it caused smashing of windowpanes and even ceiling fans in the judicial complex were bent due to a the intensity of the blast. Officials of the bomb disposal squad said that from 10-12kg capacity of explosive was used in the suicide jacket by the bomber. Head and legs of the suicide bomber were found. He was wearing black shoes, which were also recovered from the site of the incident. Officials said that it seemed that they were 18 to 20 years of age but the real facts about their age could be unveiled later after the investigations. Police party chased the second suicide bomber who was killed near the Panjpir canal. Acting District Police Officer Sirajul Hassan told media that he was also wearing the suicide jacket that was recovered from him by the bomb disposal squad. Firing continued unabated for about 10-minute and every body was running for cover. Injured Atif Rahim, a clerk in education department said that he was going to the account office when suddenly he heard the firing and a big blast. As result of firing I was also inured. I plunged into nearby drain to shield myself and later firing stopped I moved to the judicial complex, he told this correspondent. When asked District Coordination Officer (DCO) Abdul Jabbar Khan told media that the district government had received information a week back that the suicide bombers might target the government buildings. We have beeped up the security and the sacrifices of the policemen prevented a big disaster, he said. He saluted the killed policemen and said that the security of the government buildings would be improved further. The policemen who lost their lives included Said Faroosh (Gohati) and Ghani Subhan (Takhat Bahi, Mardan) and a passerby Sher Afzal (Parmoli). The names of the injure are Atif Rahim, Manawar, Mukamil Shah, Faqir Nawab, Abdul Saleem, Munjawar Khan, Shamsher Khan Gul Nazir and Said Nawab. Leaders of the political parties visited the Police Line and expressed readiness to render sacrifices for the region while keeping the district peaceful at all cost. However, analysts said that the suicide attack had created panic among the people and it would put more pressure on the police force.
