ISLAMABAD Taking serious notice of target-killings of Pashtoons in Karachi during the last couple of weeks, Central Information Secretary of Awami National Party, Senator Zahid Khan, on Tuesday said that they had submitted an adjournment motion with Senate Secretariat for debate on murky law and order situation in the port city in its upcoming session, while they would also take up the issue with the President and the Prime Minister. Talking to media persons here at Parliament House, Senator Zahid Khan said that keeping in view the fast deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi, only Rangers could restore peace in the city. Without naming Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Zahid said that they would not tolerate the hegemony of a particular political group. He also rejected the Governments plan on the future of Local Bodies system in the province, particularly Karachi. He stressed the need for purging the port city of illegal arms and ammunition and stressed the need for taking all the political entities in Karachi onboard for achieving durable peace. He expressed grave concern over the target-killings of Pashtoons and said if the things were not put in right frame immediately, the city would plunge into deep crises and the responsibility would rest with both the Federal and Sindh governments. He said that they had already submitted an adjournment motion with Senate Secretariat for urgent debate on the Karachi issue while the party leadership would also be meeting the President and the Prime Minister over, what he termed, the persecution and killing of innocent Pashtoons at the hands of certain mafias. He said that they restrained their party activists in Karachi not to respond to the violent acts of certain groups but if the present spree of target-killings continue, the things would slip out of their control and the responsibility would rest with the authorities concerned. To a question, Zahid also criticised the way they were kept out of the core committee meetings on the future of Local Bodies in the province and demanded of the Government that not only ANP but other stakeholders in Karachi should also be made part of core committee to draw out roadmap for the port city encompassing all issues including the future of Local Bodies System and bringing lasting peace in the port city. To another question, he said that ANP would support reverting back to the old Local Bodies System in Karachi where instead of giving the reins of the city in the hands of any particular political group, districts should be revived for better management and power-sharing at the basic tier of governance. Zahid said the restraint that ANP was observing in Karachi should not be taken as its weakness and the party would not tolerate further killings of their people and asked the Government to take corrective steps forthwith.
