Hazara MPAs active for unanimous resolution on separate province

PESHAWAR Lawmakers in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly hailing from Hazara division have formed a six-member committee to muster support for the members of the provincial legislature for a unanimous passage of the resolution regarding the Hazara province. In the first phase, the committee led by the PML-N Parliamentary leader in the provincial assembly and ex-chief minister, Pir Sabir Shah, is to meet provincial presidents of different parties having representation in the house. The lone task of the committee is to gather maximum support of the provincial assembly members for a unanimous adoption of the resolution. The committee comprises of Mufti Kifayatullah of JUI-F, Wajih-uz-Zaman of PML-Likem-inded, PML-Q's Qalandar Lodhi, Habib-ur-Rehman Tanoli (Independent) and ANP's Maulana Obaidullah and Pir Mohammad Sabir Shah as its head. The committee is to start holding formal meetings with provincial leaderships of various political parties this week. The first round of the meetings would be concluded by the end of the current month. The committee would meet central leaderships of the political parties in the second phase to urge them to support the resolution about Hazara province, the sources said. Like other legislatures from Hazara, Provincial Minister for Higher Education, Qazi Asad, who hails from the Haripur districts and belongs to the ruling Awami National Party (ANP), is among the leading supporters of the resolution. It was him, who submitted the resolution in the provincial assembly. The movement for the separate province of Hazara was launched soon after the Frontier province was renamed as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a much awaited demand of the different political forces particularly, the ruling ANP. A democratic way was adopted for the renaming of the province, and it was renamed according to the 18th amendment that was made into law unanimously by the parliament. However people both elected and non-elected of three districts of Hazara division - Abbotabad, Mansehra and Haripur - took to streets soon after the renaming of the province and unanimously started seeking a separate province. The Pakhtun populace of Battagram and Kohistan districts of the same division, however, did not join them in their movement; instead they started demanding a separate division of their own, which they liked to call Abasyn division. The non-elected political forces of the three districts led by Baba Haider Zaman held rallies, seminars and protest demonstrations in favour of the Hazara Province. They visited different cities to mobilize people and get maximum support in this regard. They are confident that their movement will culminate in the formation of a separate province for the people of Hazara. On the other hand, the elected leadership in the provincial assembly from different political backgrounds used a democratic way for their cause. Thus, legislatures belonging to these parties formally formed a six-member committee and initiated efforts for the purpose. The supporters of Abasyn division have a committee of their own. They have so far held meetings with the provincial chief minister and ministers in the provincial cabinet to seek the status of a separate division for their remotest districts.
