Pak welcomes Saudi mediation

FOREIGN Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said Pakistan welcomes Saudi mediation for the restoration of meaningful composite dialogue with India. Qureshi arrived in Riyadh Saturday on a two-day visit to the Kingdom. In an interview with Saudi Gazette, Qureshi said: We would welcome the good offices of Saudi Arabia to play a role in the normalisation of relations between Pakistan and India. On the lingering issue of Jammu and Kashmir, the bone of contention between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, he said Pakistan believed that dialogue was the only way forward. Pakistan seeks resolution of the Kashmir issue through peaceful means and dialogue. We believe that Kashmir is an international issue, which needs to be resolved in accordance with the UN resolutions as well as aspirations of the Kashmiri people, he said. Pakistan is a key US ally in the war against terror and is playing a crucial role in the ongoing efforts to stamp out the menace. Qureshi said Pakistan has set up a National Counter-Terrorism Authority to effectively deal with the issue on a long-term basis. The Minister said Pakistan was committed to fight terrorism in all its forms as the menace poses a serious threat to Pakistans security. Online adds: Saudi Arabia has lauded Pakistans quest and evolution of democratic norms and constitutional reforms that have also brought a positive change in overall perspective of Pakistan. In a statement issued from Islamabad, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi met his Saudi Arabian counterpart in Jeddah, during which both sides discussed issues of mutual and bilateral trust and interest. During the meeting, the Saudi foreign minister briefed Shah Mahmood Qureshi about the visit of Indian PM Manmohan Singh, and assured that Saudi-Indian relations would never in any way affect Pakistan-Saudi relations; but rather help pave the way for peace and progress in Pakistan. Both also discussed the current Afghan situation, and agreed to carry on further consensus regarding the country in future as well. The Saudi foreign minister also lauded the efforts of Pakistani leadership for its efforts to strengthen democracy in the country, while Qureshi also briefed the Saudi counterpart about his recent American visit.
