ISLAMABAD - Veteran politician and Chief of Awami Muslim League Sh Rashid Ahmed is unlikely to get PPP support in the forthcoming by-elections in NA-55 Rawalpindi despite his recent one-on-one candle dinner with President Zardari at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. Well-placed sources told TheNation, Sunday, that the upcoming polls would be the most challenging one for Sh Rashid ever since he entered electoral politics. Many believe that Sh Rashid Ahmed has little prospect to win election against the PML-N nominated candidate Shakeel Aawn. While the PPP parliamentary board has also made recommendation to the partys high command to field a PPP candidate. However, it is yet to be seen how President Asif Ali Zardari addresses the tricklish issue that might land the PPP in direct confrontation with the PML-N, its coalition partner in Punjab government. Either way, PPP leadership will have to take into consideration two important aspects while taking its decision whether to field or not its candidate from NA-55. On one hand it will annoy the leadership of the PML-N that is PPPs major coalition partner in the Punjab government while on the other, such decision would be the negation of PPP, PML-N understanding that neither of the two would field its candidate on the seat won by the other in 2008 general elections. Therefore, sources were of the view that Sh Rashid had little chance to win this election sans PPP support, as the PML-N is hell bent not to lose the seat. PML-N had won twice the NA-55 after defeating Sh Rashid who had retained it since 1985. Javed Hashmi of the PMl-N defeated Rashid for the first time in 2008 general elections. Sources therefore said that Sh Rashid even if he decides to contest the forthcoming by-polls on NA-55 might retire from the race in the middle of the election on any pretext.
