PM at centre stage to defuse political crisis

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani was at the centre stage to defuse tension at the national political horizon ensued by the imposition of Governor's Rule in Punjab following the disqualification of Sharif brothers. The sources aware of the overt and covert efforts being made from different quarters disclosed to TheNation that in the prevailing circumstances where the trust between the two major political forces was at all time low, Premier Gilani was the only acceptable person to the beleaguered Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and that was the reason all the reconciliation efforts were being channelled through him. Prime Minister Gilani remained engaged in series of meetings held here at PM House and the most important one was with the Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani who for the first time met Premier Gilani after his US visit. Ostensibly the Army Chief had briefed the Premier on the details of his US visit but actually he discussed with him the prevailing murky political scenario with the imminent chances of collapse of the incumbent political dispensation. The sources privy to the deliberations of the meeting, which was held soon after the one-on-one meeting of the Army Chief with President Zardari, Gilani and Kayani were unanimous in their views to bring down the temperature as the hostile posture taken by PML-N leadership following the imposition of the Governor's Rule in Punjab and the unflinching stand taken by Presidency on the situation were not at all in the interest of the country and could cause irreparable loss to the country. The sources further said that the Chief of Army Staff had made it clear to the Premier that Army wouldn't intervene as it wanted to see the democratic institutions flourish in the country but at the same time warned that the prevailing deadlock between the political forces would spin the things into complete disarray. The sources further said that Army Chief advised the political leadership to put the house in order as confusion and confrontation would not in the interest of any stakeholder. The sources said that the Prime Minister fully agreed with the Army Chief and it was decided that all those who mattered in the system would be asked to play their due role in defusing tension between the two main stakeholders in the incumbent political system. The sources further disclosed that the main role in defusing tension between PPP and PML-N was being played by ANP President Asfandyar Wali Khan and JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman who were in constant touch with Mian Nawaz Sharif, President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani. The sources further said that as a confidence building measure, the government had withdrawn the Ordinance of mobile courts and a constitutional move would also be made during the current session of the National Assembly to nullify the disqualification of Sharif brothers followed by lifting of Governor's Rule in Punjab. The sources further said that PML-N leadership was demanding certain guarantees from the government before getting into reconciliation process and in that connection both the Parliamentary and non-parliamentary players had stepped in to steer the country from the prevailing political mess. The sources further said that PML-N leadership now also wanted the settlement of the judges' issue as, according to some insiders, the real power brokers were in it and were busy working on a plan to appease all the stakeholders and show a win-win situation for all. The Prime Minister in his meeting with Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that he would continue his efforts of reconciliation towards achieving greater consensus on all important issues of national importance. He emphasised the need for unity and cohesion at every level of national life, which, he added, was much required at this point of time than ever before to effectively deal with the challenges being faced by the country. Appreciating Fazl's efforts, which he volunteered for bridging the differences between the two major political forces arising after the Governor's Rule in Punjab, the Prime Minister said that the leadership of the country should rise to the occasion in order to steer the country out of the current crisis.
