Delink Punjab from economic challenges

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday said it was the need of hour to abide by Constitution and rule of law in order to strengthen state institutions. All the political parties including the main opposition party had rendered great sacrifices for restoration of the democracy and it calls for adherence to the Charter of Democracy, to further solidify the gains, he added. The Prime Minister was talking to PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif on telephone late Thursday evening. The PM said that the issues and challenges confronting the country require collective wisdom and efforts to solve these in the interest of the people. The major political parties have greater responsibility on their shoulders in this regard, he added. He said that both terrorism and economy are the major challenges which are inter-related and require focused attention of the whole nation, so that concerted efforts could be made for the welfare of the people. The PM asked the PML-N Quaid that the situation in Punjab must be delinked from the national economic challenges in order to help create economic opportunities for the people of the country. Nawaz agreed in principle with the PM that the major challenges facing the country require collective and concerted efforts. He said that his party would support the efforts directed towards welfare of people of the country. The Prime Minister also inquired about the health of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, who is proceeding abroad for treatment. The Prime Minister wished her good health and speedy recovery. Staff Reporter from Lahore adds: PML-N leader Senator Pervaiz Rasheed only mentioned that the Premier was calling all the political leaders, and his call to PML-N Quaid was also part of the process. I believe that there is an effort for having a broad-based consensus for resolving the issues confronting the country. Plus, the PPP is also trying to gather support for its already-announced roundtable conference, he added. However, a top politician was of the considered opinion that Gilani, besides making an effort to cool down the ever-rising political tempers of both the leading parties, must have discussed the Raymond Davis issue, which is pending with the Lahore High Court. The PPP government is hell bent upon building consensus on a stance, which could at least help it in having a graceful exit from the Raymond quagmire, he averred, while endorsing a perception that Gilanis old habit of 'gate-crashing and calling estranged friends had always yielded positive results.
