'N' for reviewing 60-40 formula

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leadership could not reach any conclusion on the terms and conditions of the alliance at the Punjab level following the decision of the PPP to stay as part of the provincial cabinet. The sources aware of the deliberations of the meetings taking place at various levels, following the decision of PPP to remain as the coalition partner in the Punjab government, disclosed to TheNation that Pakistan Peoples Party wanted implementation of the 40-60 share agreement in the Punjab government with PML-N. However, Mian Shahbaz Sharif and other senior members of the PML-N are reluctant to do so under the changed circumstances since they are no more part of the federal government, sources further said. With regard to deliberations that took place between PM Gilani and Mian Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday in Lahore, the sources said that both the leaders failed to make headway on power-sharing at Punjab level while PM Gilani had once again invited the PML-N to rejoin the Federal Government as per agreement reached between the two major political forces in the country soon after the general elections last year. The sources in the Pakistan Peoples Party said that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif would be holding another meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) to thrash out differences and to strike consensus formula in Punjab thus settling modalities including allocation of chairmanship of various Parliamentary Committees in Punjab Assembly and other matters. They further informed that PPP also wanted quota in the government jobs in the province while Mian Shahbaz Sharif was of the view that merit should be made the criteria for filling the government jobs. The sources in the PML-N said that the party leadership wanted to review the power-sharing formula with PPP in Punjab because earlier the agreement with PPP was made under different circumstances as at that time they were part of the Federal Government but now the party Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif had declined to join the Federal Government, so the earlier agreement needed revision, a senior party leader informed The Nation on condition of anonymity. The sources further informed that PPP could change Punjab Governor Salman Taseer under the fresh coalition deal with PML-N in Punjab but on the other hand PML-N leaders were of the view that the change of Governor was not on the demand list of the party as Salman Taseer was having normal working relation with government since the restoration of the Punjab Government by the apex court. The sources close to PML-N said that in the changed scenario PML-N was to accommodate some members of the PML-Q unification bloc at the centre which would compromise its own position in the cabinet, in case the old formula of power-sharing with PPP was to be implemented. Sources said that after the notification of Dr Tahir Javid as PML-Q unification bloc Parliamentary Party Leader in the Punjab Assembly by the speaker, they were free to decide about their future course and in case of joining the Punjab Government they could not come under defection law. The sources in the PML-Q forward bloc said that their members had not demanded anything from the Punjab Chief Minister for the unflinching support they had extended to the PML-N in extremely difficult times when Punjab Government was dislodged following Mian brothers disqualification by the Supreme Court. The only demand the members of forward bloc had made to Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif was that in future elections all the members of the forward bloc should be given the PML-N tickets from their respective constituencies. However, PML-N central leadership had decided to induct at least five ministers in the Punjab Cabinet from the forward bloc in the coming days. The sources in the PML-N informed that on one hand PML-N wanted to keep the Punjab Cabinet small while on the other PPP was demanding implementation of 40-60 power-sharing formula in letter and spirit, putting extraordinary pressure on the N-League President Mian Shahbaz Sharif. Only time would tell how he would cope with this apparently very difficult situation.
