US, Pakistan reaffirm commitment to combat terrorism

US and Pakistani defense officials reaffirmed mutual commitment against terrorism, following the joint counterterrorism operation that brought down al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden, the Pentagon said late Tuesday. Delegates from the United States and Pakistan, gathered for the 20th meeting of the US-Pakistan Defense Consultative Group in Washington, "acknowledged that the recent counterterrorism operation resulting in the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden underscores the importance of cooperation in our efforts to defeat terrorism," the Pentagon said in a statement. Both sides commended the cooperation in combating counterterrorism, and reviewed the numerous challenges facing regional security, and shared their views regarding the importance of regional peace and stability, according to the Pentagon, without going into details. During the two-day gathering, the two nations' delegations were respectively led by Lieutenant General Syed Athar Ali (ret.), Pakistan's Secretary of Defense, and Michele Flournoy, the US Undersecretary of Defense for Policy.
