Militant who flogged girl in Swat held

DERA ISMAIL KHAN - The militant who had publicly flogged a girl in Swat has been arrested, sources disclosed to TheNation. According to details, Amin alias Chhota Aftab has been cited as the militant who had publicly flogged a girl in Swat in April 2009, police sources said, adding the matter was revealed during investigation of the arrested militant. The sources told that nine militants were held in district Swat a few days ago and Amin was among them. Later, he along with other detained militants was shifted to Dera Ismail Khan for investigation. During investigation, it was disclosed that he was involved in the heinous flogging of the girl in Swat. The girl was not his relative and the resultant episode sparked criticism against the peace deal in the area. It merits mentioning here that the incident surfaced after the peace deal between the NWFP government and Sufi Muhammad, leader of defunct Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM). After the video came to the surface, both national and international media gave it prominent coverage and the peace deal was criticised on a large-scale. The episode of flogging the girl culminated to military operation Rah-e-Rast in Malakand division.
