Gilani escapes snipers' bullets

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister's cavalcade came under fire here at Islamabad Highway on Wednesday afternoon when it was heading towards Chaklala Airbase for receiving Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, police and intelligence reports said. Prime Minister Gilani was coming back to Islamabad from Lahore after conclusion of his visit in connection with the campaign for the presidential election of PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari. Though no one was hurt as a result of the firing, one of the bullet proof luxury car of PM's cavalcade received a couple of bullets believed to be fired from a high range firearm, police further said. The news of firing at PM's cavalcade spread in the whole of the country like jungle fire and stirred panic. Top officials of twin cities rushed to Islamabad Highway near Fizaia Colony and cordoned off the area. A massive hunt was also launched to arrest any possible attacker or seize any weapon but those efforts bore no fruit. Police sources later claimed that at least three suspects had been rounded up in connection with the firing on PM's cavalcade. A PM House official later claimed, "Of the multiple shots fired at the Prime Minister's vehicle, two hit the window panes of the driver side. However, due to the robust and comprehensive security measures, the Prime Minister and all the members of his motorcade remained unharmed". Earlier, the Prime Minister had reached Chaklala Airbase from Lahore. Shortly after the incident, a high-level inquiry was initiated into the firing and all the law enforcement agencies were put on task to solve the mystery of the firing. Forensic experts were also involved in the process to examine the circumstantial evidence and ascertain the caliber firearm used in the shooting, an official linked with the probe further said. Reacting to the incident, Advisor to Prime Minister on Interior Rehman Malik also ordered the law enforcement agencies to expeditiously probe into the incident and submit an initial report within 12 hours. A joint investigation team comprising police, FIA and other law enforcement agencies was also constituted to look into the matter with Director General National Police Bureau, Tariq Khosa, as its head. Meanwhile, Asif Ali Zardari, Sherry Rehman, Salman Taseer, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Liaqat Baloch and other political leaders have strongly condemned the incident. They were of the view that some elements wanted to disrupt peace and destabilise the government, however they urged that such elements wouldn't succeed. The history of the country shows that many prime ministers faced assassination attempts. Liaqat Ali Khan, Nawaz Sharif, Benazir Bhutto and Shaukat Aziz faced such attacks, while Benazir Bhutto and Liaqat Ali khan lost their lives in such types of attacks. Agencies add: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani escaped an apparent assassination attempt when two shots hit his motorcade Wednesday, just three days before the country's presidential election. Officials said Gilani was not in the car at the time, but the brazen daytime attack underscored the political turmoil and violence that have been shadowing the world's only nuclear-armed Islamic nation. Gilani's spokesman initially said he was in the vehicle but later declined to confirm that, amid the confusion surrounding the shooting in Rawalpindi. "Two bullets hit the window glass of the bulletproof car," the spokesman, Zahid Bashir, told AFP. "By the grace of Allah, the prime minister is safe." "The prime minister and his staff were not in the car," interior secretary Kamal Shah told AFP. "The prime minister had not yet landed from Lahore when the incident took place. The motorcade was on its way to the airport to receive him." Interior ministry chief Rehman Malik described the incident as 'a cowardly act'. "We will catch whoever has done it," he told reporters in Karachi. "It is not politics, but terrorism, and we condemn it." Zahid Bashir, the premier's press secretary, said unknown assailants fired "multiple sniper shots" in what he described as a 'murder attempt'. Monitoring Desk adds: Swat militants have claimed responsibility for attack on Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's motorcade on Islamabad Highway, reported a private TV channel Wednesday.
