US campaign plan frustrates Pak: ISAF Commander

ISLAMABAD (APP) Pakistan is launching an effective counter-insurgency campaign against terrorism with a number of forces that theyve really focused on doing right. This was stated by Commander, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal in an interview in Kabul with The Wall Street Journal, in which he articulated his thoughts on the regional equation. When asked what are the signs you see from Pakistan? he said: Weve seen an effective counter insurgency campaign with a number of forces that theyve really focused on doing right. Their coordination with us has been much closer. Gen McChrystal further said that there was a significant distance to go. The Pakistanis are sometimes frustrated by our campaign plan and we are sometimes frustrated by theirs; but I dont think thats unheard of between allies. About greater alignment of interests between the US and Pakistan, he said that interests of the two countries have been aligning over time but there are times when it becomes more obvious. He opined that the increase in insurgency inside Pakistan, which is internal, has put them in a position that puts greater clarity on the need to do an effective program to reduce that. He said the importance of a stable, secure and friendly Afghanistan on Pakistans border is clearly understood by Pakistan, and they state that. I think Afghanistan understands that a good working relationship with Pakistan is key, with no safe haven for Afghan insurgents inside, he added. So I think both of those countries understand that, and I think the United States also has been more clear. We get overly fixated sometimes on al Qaeda, but the reality is there are regional issues here that are potentially more important than that and so that needs to be put as one of the key points, he commented. Regarding Pakistan-India relations over Afghanistan issue, he said everything in the region affects everybody else. Pakistan is clearly affected by a number of actors, India being large. And Afghanistan is affected by a huge number of actors, he added. I think the better we can make India and Pakistan relations, the better it is for everyone, particularly a relatively weak nation right now like Afghanistan because as those two significant nations have friction sometimes, it can affect Afghanistan in ways that are just huge. He said its really important that the transparency and the trust with India be part of that calculation. And clearly the Pakistanis are worried about Indian activities inside Afghanistan and sometimes theres a lot of misperception associated with those, so I think clarity there is essential.
