KARACHI - All accused persons in the murder of Mir Murtaza Bhutto, Chairman Pakistani Peoples Party Shaheed Bhutto, were acquitted from the trial court on Saturday. Additional District and Sessions Judge (East) Aftab Ahmed Khan issued a short order after hearing the final arguments from the counsels and the prosecution. The court had reserved the judgment in the last hearing. The accused, who have been exonerated from the murder of Mir Murtaza Bhutto and his seven aides, including Federal Tax Ombudsman Shoaib Suddle, former chief of Intelligence Bureau Masud Sharif, Additional IG Sindh Wajid Ali Durrani, AIG Welfare Shahid Hayat, SSP Rai Tahir and 20 other police officials appeared in the City courts amid tight security. It is to be noted here that earlier two other accused, nominated in the same case, Asif Ali Zardari and Shikeb Qureshi were absolved in 2008. Two other accused, former Sindh Chief Minister Abdullah Shah and Inspector Zeeshan, had passed away in this span of time. On this occasion, all the officers, avoiding the media, made their exit from the back door. In the last hearing Umar Syal advocate, on behalf of the complainant Noor Mohammad, who was the house servant of Murtaza Bhutto, had argued that the encounter was totally fake in which a political leader along with his eight companions were shot dead by the police. The advocate also alleged the said shootout as one-sided. He said that slain Murtaza Bhutto received critical bullet injuries but he had been taken to the hospital with much delay. And owing to such delay and lack of required equipment at the hospital was resulted in his death. ASP Shahid Hayat, who also received bullet injuries, was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital within 20 minutes and get operated timely. He added that the ASP was shot on the backside of his body that proved that he was not shot from the convoy of Mir Murtaza Bhutto. On the other side, the defence counsel had submitted that the police were informed that some wanted accused were travelling with Murtaza Bhutto due to which the police party intercepted his convoy. Murtaza ordered his security guards to open fire on the police which police retaliated. The complainant Noor Mohammad had submitted his statement by saying that he reached the hospital along with Ghinwa Bhutto and Fatima Bhutto just 15 minutes after the incident. The police shutdown the gates of 70-Clifton as soon as the news of Murtazas injuries was received. According to the prosecution, Murtaza Bhutto was shot dead during the alleged shootout with the police on September 20, 1996, along with his companions included Ashiq Jatoi, Sattar Rajpar, Shajad Haider Ghakro, Rahim Brohi, Yar Mohammad Baloch, and Wajahat Jokhio. He was killed, when he along with his security guards, reached some 100 metres from his residence located at 70 Clifton was shot dead along with six others including his close aide Ashiq Jatoi by a heavy contingent of police in an alleged shootout. On the other side, PPP (SB) expressed its dissatisfaction over the courts judgment and announced to appeal in the Sindh High Court.
