Swabi police kill 3 power protesters

SWABI Three young protesters were killed and 10 injured when police opened indiscriminate fire on them at Safdar Chowk here on Friday. People of several regions in Tehsil Topi turned violent and set on fire the entire record of main Topi sub-division of Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) office but the police did not take action against them at that time. Insiders told this correspondent that talks between the Pesco officials and the elders of different regions failed to yield any result. The elders warned and demanded that the prolonged loadshedding should be stopped by the authorities concerned and if they failed in doing so, they would face dire consequences. Announcements were made on loudspeakers, appealing to the people to join the protest demonstration against the loads-hedding while accusing the Pesco officials that they were reluctant to give up the prolonged hours of outage. People of Kotha, Zarobi and Topi participated in the protest demonstration. They gathered at Safdar Chowk on Swabi-Mardan road and blocked the road for all kinds of traffic at Safdar junction-point. From there they marched towards the Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate Chowk and blocked the road there too. The Swabi-Topi and Topi-Gadoon roads remained blocked for all kind of traffic. They also set on fire tyres, chanting slogans against the Pesco officials. They alleged that the Pesco officials remained in league with the entrepreneurs of Gadoon Estate and diverted the electricity to industry at the cost of the common consumers who have been facing the excessive loadshedding despite the increase of the water level in the Dams, including Tarbela Dam and Ghazi Barotha. From Gadoon Chowk the protesting people marched to the Pesco office in the main bazaar of Tehsil Topi. Sensing the danger the Pesco staff disappeared and the protesters raided the sub-division office. Police party present on the occasion was not in position to stop the infuriated protesters. They threw out the computers from the offices, broken the windows, doors, furniture and set on fire the entire record in the lawn of the sub-division. They were present there till turning of the whole documents into ashes. The building was also set on fire and the fire-brigade staff took two hours to control it. However, officials said that both the record and office were burnt completely. At the time of protest, the authorities Tarbela Dam and Ghazi Barotha hydro-protect alerted and beefed up the security, fearing that the protesters might not move towards Tarbela Dam as the main entrance gate of the Tarbela was located just two kilometers away from the Pesco sub-division which was set on fire by protesters. When contacted a Pesco official said, Nothing remained in the record. I dont know how we would handle the post-protest situation.
