SAJID ZIA & IQTIDAR GILANI LAHORE Visibly feeling pains in the wound inflicted by the remarks of Law Minister Ran Sana Ullah Khan about Chaudhrys of Gujrat in relation to Roberts Farms possession the previous day, the Opposition members in the Punjab Assembly on Friday turned their guns to Rana, demanding his apology and imposition of penalty of two-day suspension of his membership. However, the thin Opposition failed to prevail upon the majority voice in the House and opted for disrupting the House proceedings by staging a walk out not to mark protest but to render the House inquorate. Thereby it managed to technically keep the proceedings in abeyance for about 45 minutes during which the Treasury moped up its members from every nook and corner to make for the quorum. Last day, when the session started an hour behind its fixed time of 9:00 am, the Opposition picked up the proceedings from the same end it had left at the conclusion of question hour on Thursday. The Speaker, Rana Muhammad Iqbal, begun the question hour but the Opposition Leader Ch Zaheer uddin along with Seemal Kamran, Samina Khawar, and Khadija Umar gave an indication that they would take the Law Minister to task in the first instance for the language he had used about Ch Pervaiz Elahi and his son Moonis Elahi on Roberts Farms land. Ch Zaheer complained that last day they were not allowed to speak on Thursday. On the heels of this, the female members of PML-Q stood up to raise a Point of Order in a bid to speak out their mind on the Law Ministers remarks. As it This prompted the treasury benches to rise up and defuse the pressure from the Opposition, and the House failed to hear the Speaker above this uproar in the House. As the time passed by, the House begun to replicate the last days scene as Sajida Mir of the PPP 'rebuked 'char ka tola (obviously referring to female MPAs) in the rival camp but she only received the NRO slogans in return from the others. Amid this situation, the sane voice raised by Amir Sultan Cheema also went unnoticed. He wanted the members not to sling mud on the leadership of others as conflicting voices in the House were fortifying the forces talking minus-one, minus-two formula to derail the democracy. The Opposition benches chanted slogans 'No Law Minister No to make him leave the House and Treasury traded it saying 'Chor Machaye Shor, Chor Machaye Shor and 'Dakoo, Dakoo suppressing the full-throated 'no, no of the Speaker to both of them. Khadija Umar called the Speaker to suspend membership of Rana Sana for two days for disgracing her leaders but she faced a strong opposition to her demand from the Treasury. The Opposition threatened not to let the House proceed on if action against Rana did not follow. And amid slogans from both sides, the Opposition walked out rendering the House inquorate. In order to call the members from outside, the Speaker ordered for ringing the bell for five minutes but the quorum still remained short and on that, the Speaker adjourned the House for half an hour to let the presence of required number of members in the House. Almost three hours business of day was lost by delayed start, as well as the commotion and clamour by the time, the House met again to resume from almost the same previous scene. When the session resumed on completion of quorum, the Q-Leaguers adopted the same strategy of creating a noise, when any treasury member or minister, especially Rana Sana Ullah Khan, and even the Speaker tried to speak. The treasury bench did not make any serious effort to calm down the opposition; instead it opted to tit for tat while exchanging derogatory remarks and even gestures that remained a hallmark of the whole proceedings. Not only the Opposition, but also the treasury members, did their best to defeat their opponents in sloganeering even at the cost of debate on the most important issue of law and order in the province. Amid hew and cry the Speaker adjourned the session till Monday (November 9) at 3 pm.
