Moving scenes witnessed as Dr Imran Farooq laid to rest

KARACHI Moving scenes were witnessed when thousands of mourners on Saturday in sobs and tears and overwhelmed with grief, buried the founding and martyred leader of MQM Dr Imran Farooq in the afternoon at Shuhada Graveyard of Yasinabad, located close to the MQM headquarter Nine Zero. The funeral prayer of the assassinated leader was attended by thousands of grieving MQM supporters at the jam-packed Jinnah Ground where the workers expressed their grief and sorrow and chanted slogans, Imrans sacrifice will bring the revolution. The leadership of MQM, workers, prominent personalities and representatives of both political and non-political organisaions attended the funeral prayers. Maulana Asad Thanvi led the funeral prayers. Earlier, the plane carrying the body of Dr Imran Farooq from London landed at Karachi Airport. The coffin was brought to the Terminal-I and was shifted to the KKF ambulance draped in floral wreath and the MQM flag. The ambulance carrying the body was escorted by a huge convoy of cars carrying the MQM leaders and personnel of law enforcement agencies. The body was taken to the ancestral home of the martyred leader in Sharifabad and was later moved to the MQM headquarters Nine Zero before it was taken to the Jinnah Ground for the funeral prayers. Family members of late Dr Imran Farooq including his parents Farooq Ahmed and mother Raeesa Farooq, widow Shumaila Imran, his two kids, sisters and brothers-in-law accompanied the coffin from London. Deputy Convener MQM Coordination Committee Dr Farooq Sattar, members of the committee Raza Haroon and Wassay Jaleel accompanied the coffin from London to Karachi. The body of the slain leader was received at the Airport by Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, MQM leaders Haider Abbas Rizvi, Faisal Sabzwari, Babar Ghouri and Rauf Siddiqui. Rehman Malik while talking to the media at the airport said that he was representing PPP and the federal government. He expressed satisfaction over the security arrangements made for the arrival and funeral rites of the slain MQM leader. Malik and the Sindh Governor followed the path of the convoy that carried the body of Dr Imran Farooq in a helicopter to check the security arrangements throughout the route and at Yasinabad Graveyard. MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi while talking to TheNation informed that hundreds of MQM workers were assisting the law enforcement agencies in maintaining security. We are satisfied with the security measures added the MQM leader. Both public and private transport remained off the roads and commercial centres also remained closed giving this bustling city a deserted look as people chose to remain indoors. Dr Farooq Sattar while talking to the reporters said, We are thankful to the citizens of Karachi for their support adding, I do not have words to appreciate the contribution of the citizens and workers of the MQM. We had wished to see Dr Imran Farooq in Karachi with Qauid-e-Tehreek Altaf Hussain on the day of success of the revolutionary mission, but unfortunately, that did not happen, said Dr Farooq Sattar after the burial of martyred MQM leader. Special walkthrough gates with metal detectors were set up at the entrance at Jinnah Ground. Two helicopters hovered overhead to monitor the funeral prayers and procession. Police vehicles equipped with explosive jamming device moved along the procession.
