Farmers protest at Wagah against water theft

LAHORE - Growers community on Sunday launched a protest movement against India for stealing Pakistans water. A rally in this regard was organised here at the Wagah border to condemn the Indian aggression. The protest rally was organised by the Pakistan Muttahida Kisan Mahaz in connection with Defense Day here at Wagah border, where speakers severely criticised all governments irrespective of political divide inside Pakistan for failing to develop a national consensus over the construction of water reservoirs, resulting into looming water crisis. President of the PMKM Ayub Khan Mayo warned the government that the Kisan Mahaz would organise farmers protest outside Diplomatic Enclave in the federal capital to highlight the Indian designs. He also announced that they would also stage strong protest demonstration outside the House of Lords in London and then at EU offices in Brussels to mobilise the international community in this regard. He also said that the Pakistans growers would also stage protest demonstration outside the Headquarters of UN in the USA against India. We have launched this movement as the government has failed to take any action on this issue of national important, Ayub Khan said, adding that if the government did not take up the issue, the farmers will start a campaign to stop paying water charges and surcharges from December 31. He also alleged that all the governments had been ignoring the fact that water supplies to the southern Punjab were on the decline. He said that the water flow should be hovering around 34,000 cusecs during April-May due to the summer season, but it stood at 17,000 cusecs this year. He added that Indians released large quantity of water when it was not required and crops were damaged due to flooding. He criticised the Indus Water Commission for failing to inform the factual position to the authorities and none of the steps taken by the commission had materialised in favour of the country. On this occasion, speakers belonging to various farmers organisations said that India had launched the Northern River Linking Project that would be completed in 2016, and it would allow the Indians to divert water flowing in three rivers of Kashmir. Apart from the Baglihar Dam and the Ganga Kishan Dam, India was working on 62 water projects in its northern part, speakers said, adding that India was telling lies that these were hydro power generation projects at run of the river. The speakers said that the political elite in Pakistan did not take into consideration the Indian nefarious designs that included building of water reservoirs at the Indus river, saying that these projects would enable New Delhi to gain control over water heading towards Pakistan. They further said that under the Indus Basin Treaty, Pakistan had sold rights over Ravi, Sutlej and Beas to India, but Pakistan had the right over Chenab, Jhelum and the rivers flowing from Kashmir. They said that after Baglihar and Kishanganga dams, India was building projects at all the waterways in Kashmir and the Punjab, while the Pakistani politicians were not fighting the case seriously.
