Gilani orders bill for IHC re-establishment

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has directed Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan to prepare bill for re-establishment of Islamabad High Court so that the same could be approved by the Parliament. A delegation of Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) headed by its President Sajjad Afzal Cheema along with other office-bearers called on Prime Minister Gilani at his Chamber in the Parliament House Friday afternoon and briefed him about the situation arising out of the dissolution of Islamabad High Court (IHC) as a result of the Supreme Court decision. The Prime Minister was apprised that over 17,000 cases were dispensed by the former IHC since its inception while 14,000 cases were still pending before the court at the time of its dissolution. The Prime Minister was further informed that over 1,600 members of the IHCBA were registered during the last four months representing various parts of the country. The delegation requested the Prime Minister for the re-establishment of the high court keeping in view the need of 1.8 million population. The Prime Minister while endorsing the concern directed the Ministry of Law and Justice to prepare a necessary amendment bill in this regard for the approval of the Parliament. Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr Babar Awan, Minister of State for Law & Justice, Afzal Sindhu, PML-N MNAs Anjum Aqeel Khan and Pirzada Imran Shah were also present during the meeting.
