LAHORE - The Punjab government has procured 3.4 million tons of wheat, and the target of six million tons will be achieved, while surplus wheat will be exported after getting final nod from the federal government. This was stated by Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan and Minister Finance Tanveer Ashraf Kaira while jointly addressing a press conference here on Thursday. Earlier, Chief Minister Punjab chaired meeting of the provincial cabinet, including PPP ministers, which met for the first time since the disqualification of Shahbaz Sharif and the imposition of the Governor Rule. Both sides showed positive gestures to each other, and vowed to continue working jointly for the betterment of Pakistan. Matters regarding law and order situation in the province, wheat procurement campaign and the local government came under discussion. Secretary Home gave a briefing regarding law and order and security arrangements, and Secretary Food briefed about wheat procurement drive. Addressing the meeting, Shahbaz Sharif said that Pakistan was facing serious challenges and in order to cope with these challenges, the whole nation should be united and resolve all the problems jointly. About wheat procurement, he said the target was increased for the betterment of small and medium farmers. Solid measures have been taken to ensure due returns to the cultivators, and to remove difficulties in the provision of Bardana to them. After the campaign, a cabinet committee will also be constituted to evolve a comprehensive strategy for the improvement of performance of the Food Department and welfare of cultivators, he said, while lauding the services of the ministers, secretaries and administration for ensuring fixed price of wheat. Regarding the maintenance of law and order, Shahbaz Sharif said it was the top priority of the government and solid steps had been taken for ensuring peaceful atmosphere. The salaries of police have been increased for improving its performance whereas number of elite force is being doubled and police is being trained on modern lines. Similarly, patrolling system has further been strengthened in the areas of other provinces adjacent to the Punjab province, he added. The meeting unanimously decided that the enquiries against the corruption of district Nazims pending in the Anti-Corruption Establishment should be completed on merit in an impartial and transparent manner. Rana Sana, while welcoming the PPP members, said both parties wanted to serve masses by forgetting the past, and it was decided in the Cabinet meeting to further nurture the relationship. Reconciliation is the need of the hour, and two major parties have decided to promote politics of reconciliation. The situation demands from both parties to work together for strengthening democracy, he added. About the wheat procurement, he said the target of six million tons would be achieved, while 3.4 had been procured already. Private stores have been obtained on rent, while surplus wheat will be exported after final approval by the Federal government, he said, while adding that next year better arrangements would be made for the wheat procurement. About the law and order, Rana Sana said a comprehensive strategy was being prepared to root out extremism and the CM had directed the Home Department and law enforcement agencies for making the provincial boundaries secure. He said the enquires into the corruption of the Local Bodies would be expedited though after February 24, this process hit snags because of a few with vested interests, while no enquires were stopped during the Governor Rule. He explicitly said the PML-N had never demanded Governor Salmaan Taseers removal. Tanvir Ashraf Kaira said that the PPP was thankful to the PML-N for offering it to rejoin the government.
