MQM stops tirades after assurances

ISLAMABAD Muttahida Qaumi Movement has halted the scathing criticism against incumbent setup following the assurance with regard to fulfilment of promises by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in a recently held meeting in Karachi. Sources aware of the deliberations of the meetings of PPP and MQM leadership said that the President and Prime Minister had asked MQM to observe restraint and stop voicing against the system, as any damage to the incumbent political dispensation would cost dearly to all the political forces. Sources further informed that MQM had opened a plethora of complaints against the PPP Sindh Chapter and said that despite being the part of the Sindh Government, they were being targeted by the law enforcement agencies. It was agreed in the meeting that MQM would be taken on board while preparing future strategy to bring normalcy in the city. It was also agreed that some of the MQM activists, who were under custody on charges of target killing, would be released, as MQM leadership claimed that these activists were falsely implicated in the cases of target killing. Sources further informed that it was further agreed in the meeting that the option of handing over Karachi to the Army would not be opted at any cost and the Rangers and police force would be used to bring things under control. Sources further informed that President Asif Ali Zardari had assured the MQM leadership that all the demands of MQM including the fate of Local Bodies Elections in the Province, particularly in the urban centres, would be resolved amicably and all the concerns of MQM would be duly addressed. MQM leadership was of the view that the Government should give them some timeframe for fulfilment of the promises, as since becoming the part of the ruling coalition they were just kept on promises and none of their demand was fulfilled. Sources further said that MQM had also demanded some changes in the administration at the provincial level and both President and Prime Minister had assured that these changes would be made in due course. It was further agreed in the meeting that both sides would stop giving statements against each other and against the incumbent system and would jointly work to hammer out irritants. MQM had also shown serious reservations over the Awami National Partys role in Karachi, especially the ANPs demand with regard to hand over Karachi to the Army. Both President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani had assured MQM that they would not call Army in Karachi and the matters would be resolved politically. President Asif Ali Zardari had stressed the need of further activating the core committee comprising MQM, ANP and PPP to resolve the issues facing the coalition partners in the port city of Karachi.
