ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday ordered the Inspector General Police, Punjab to oversee the Sialkot tragedy himself, and warned of action against the inquiry team in case of negligence. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprised Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday was hearing the suo moto case of the lynching of two brothers in the presence of police in Sialkot. Justice Iftikhar warned, There should be no lapses and if that happens then there will be serious consequences of it. Justice Ramday remarked that if police wanted they could arrest criminals within 24 hours, but why did they wait for the courts orders. Advocate General Punjab Khawaja Harris informed the court that ASI Waris Saleem had also been arrested. He said if the officials, who were assigned task, did not deliver then the system would not work. The Additional Superintendent Police, Sialkot informed the court that eight teams had been constituted and they had been working round the clock to nab the culprits. The Chief Justice observed that newly appointed DPO, Bilal Siddique Kamiyana should not take the credit as the accused, SHO Rana Illyas and ASI Waris Ali had surrendered themselves. The CJ said that no one was above the law and the court sympathised with deceased Bilal of the rival party. The CJ ordered AGP to inform the DPO and RPO to appear before the court in the next hearing. The court adjourned the case till September 27 so that police could complete the investigations.
