Taliban release video of captured US soldier

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Taliban has released a new video of US soldier Bowe Bergdahl captured last year in Afghanistan, calling for his exchange for Taliban prisoners, the IntelCentre monitoring service said Thursday. The nearly eight-minute-long video showed Bergdahl, in a beard and wearing an army jacket, reading a newspaper and doing pushups, the service said. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid is heard at the end of the video making a statement, with English subtitles, reiterating Taliban demands for the release a limited number of prisoners in exchange for this American prisoner. Unfortunately, the arrogant American rulers are not ready to take any step in this regard, it said, according to IntelCentre. Bergdahl was captured June 30, 2009. The Taliban has already released two earlier videos showing him to be alive. Meanwhile, the US-led NATO military in Afghanistan condemned the Taliban for releasing a new video of the captured American soldier in which they offered to release him as part of a prisoner exchange. US Navy Rear Admiral Gregory Smith said in a statement: The continuing use of Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl as a means of propaganda is a deplorable act and only fuels our efforts to find him and bring him home. The insurgents who hold Bowe are obviously using him as a means to ultimately cause pain to his family and friends, said Smith, director of communication for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). It continues to reflect the cruel tactics designed to deceive the Afghan people and the international community of their true intentions, he added, vowing to continue the search for the 24-year-old infantryman.
