Top drug trafficker among six dead

KARACHI Finally the law-enforcement agencies managed to eliminate some six alleged gangsters, including their chief Saeed Baloch alias Kalu Current, in a joint operation conducted by Rangers and the police on Sunday. The operation was conducted at Dalmia where more than 250 ordinary personnel and the commandos kept the locality surrounded for nine hours. A huge cache of weapons including rocket launchers, rockets, hand grenades, SMGs, police uniforms, ammunition and other materials were seized while around 200 suspects had also been detained. Interestingly, not a single personnel sustained even a minor injury against the notorious gang involved in drug trafficking, which raised several questions regarding the extraordinary efficiency or strategy as the law-enforcement agencies had failed even to enter the 'occupied neighbourhood for the last many years. According to police sources, the operation, lasting from 5am to 2pm, was started after Kalus accomplices in a bid to attack their rivals mistakenly threw a hand grenade at the office of a sensitive agency. DSP Aziz Bhatti Fakharul Islam identified the dead members of Kalu Current as Moosa, Ismail alias Khanu and Asghar Tattoo while the identity of two of the dead persons is yet to be ascertained. Three passers-by Bashir Ahmad, Ghulam Ali and Sardar Khan, were also injured in the crossfire. Officials also claimed to have apprehended around 200 people out of whom 15 were said to be associated with the Kalus men while the remaining had been listed as innocent. Kalu Current was allegedly the right hand of Lyaris gangster Ghaffar Zikri who presently commanded the Arshad Pappu group after Pappus arrest. He had been active in the area for the last two years and was wanted by the police in over 16 cases of murder, kidnappings for ransom, drugs peddling and others. Several innocent people had also lost their lives in the ongoing gang war between Kalu Current group, associated with Lyaris Arshad Pappu group, and Haji Aslam group, which enjoyed the support of Pappus rival Rehman Dakait. The regular exchange of fire at Dalmia was similar to what had been a routine in Lyari where the gang war had originated. Police and Rangers had often claimed to have carried out the search operations at Dalmia and the adjacent areas of Jhando Para, Hindu Para, Farooq Karim Bux Para, Yasin Football Club, Mangho Para and others without any major success. The latest gun battles between the two groups had erupted three days ago. As the law enforcing agencies failed to take any concrete step, a large number of locals migrated to other areas. The sources in the area claimed that it was a one-sided operation, launched with the assistance of Kalu Currents rival Haji Aslam group. They first arrested them and later shot them dead in the streets, the sources said. They further said the killed gangsters, armed with sophisticated weapons, could have targeted the LEAs easily but the episode suggested otherwise. They also questioned how the law-enforcers could met success easily as they had always faced stiff resistance in the past. Meanwhile, the LEAs officials avoided the media when they were contacted for comments about the successful operation. According to the area sources, Kalu Current along with Haji Aslam group had been selling drugs and involved in rivalry for controlling the area but an operation was avoided in the past keeping in mind the dense population and the complexity of population. Meanwhile, CCPO Karachi Wasim Ahmed has announced an award of one million rupees for the police and Rangers for hunting down the four most wanted criminals in Karachi. Moreover, the operation to cleanse the locality of the criminal elements was in full swing till the filing of this story, as the law-enforcers had established pickets to consolidate their position.
