ISLAMABAD - An important meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) will be held on next Saturday (January 15) to consider the name of two judges of the Supreme Court and 12 Additional Judges of Lahore High Court. The sources told The Nation on Saturday that names of CJ SHC, Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany, and the senior most judge of the Sindh High Court, Justice Mushir Alam, were under consideration for the elevation to the Supreme Court. Justice Osmanys term as CJ SHC expires on October 12, 2012, while Justice Mushir Alam, a puisne judge of SHC, would retire as SHC judge on August 17, 2018. The sources said that after the elevation of Justice Osmany to the apex court Justice Amir Hani Muslim could be appointed CJ of SHC. Justice Osmany was the member of the 14-member bench of the apex court, which declared November 3, 2007 Emergency and PCO as unconstitutional on July 31, 2009. He was promoted to Supreme Court in Abdul Hamid Dogars period and according to apex courts July 31, 2009 decision, he had to go back to his position of 2nd November 2009. The sources also mentioned that after the two appointments, the apex court would fix the hearing of the 18th Amendment case as well as Federal Governments review petition on National Reconciliation Ordinance judgement case. It is also relevant to mention that Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday, who is working as ad hoc judge, will expire his service on February 18 after completing one-year extension. The two seats of judges in apex court became vacant after the retirement of Justice Rehmat Jafferi and Justice Chaudhary Ijaz, who retired on November 21, 2010 and the May 4, 2010, respectively after obtaining the age of superannuation. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JPC) in its last meeting on December 4, 2010 finalised names of Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman, who has been appointed as Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court, Justice Anwar Kansi and Justice Riaz Ahmad Khan, two other judges of the IHC. Besides that all the four additional judges of Balochistan High Court - Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Tahira Safdar, Justice Muhammad Noor Meskanzai and Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mengal - were given one-year extension. While, out of the Sindh High Courts nine judges, whose term expired on September 25, Justice Shahid Ali Bajwa, Justice Ghulam Sarwar Korai, Justice Tufail H Ebrahim, Justice Irfan Sadat Khan, Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi and Justice Munib Akhtars tenure were extended. The cases of Justice Bhajandas Dejwani and Justice Miss Rukhsana Ahmed were deferred.
