Deedar appointed as new NAB Chairman

ISLAMABAD The Federal Government on Friday appointed Justice (Retd) Deedar Hussain Shah as Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and later in the evening he has assumed charge of his office. With the appointment of Chairman NAB ignoring the serious reservations of Leader of Opposition on the candidature of Justice(Retd) Deedar Hussain Shah Government is likely plunge into another crisis. Sources in the Government informed that the Presidential camp, once again, prevailed on the Prime Minister, who wanted to take Leader of Opposition on board in the process but was forced to forward the summary of Justice (Retd) Deedar Hussain Shah for the slot of Chairman NAB. The Supreme Court of Pakistan in Asfandyar versus State case made the 'meaningful consultation with Leader of Opposition mandatory on the Government for the appointment of Chairman NAB. But in sheer violation of the apex courts verdict the Government had ignored the objection on the candidature of Justice (Retd) Deedar Hussain Shah and notified his name for the slot of Chairman NAB. In his objection Leader of Opposition Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had clearly mentioned that as Justice (Retd) Deedar Hussain Shah was twice elected MPA on the Pakistan Peoples Partys ticket from Sindh, so the apolitical and unbiased standing primarily required for the post, is compromised. He suggested that the Government should appoint some apolitical and neutral person for this important post. Sources in the Prime Minister Secretariat informed TheNation that Premier Gilani was willing to honour the objection of Leader of Opposition and that was the reason he had sent Federal Minister for Petroleum Syed Naveed Qamar and Senator Mian Raza Rabbani to Ch Nisar Ali Khan to have his input on the matter. Sources further said that then as usual the Prime Minister succumbed to the pressure coming from the hawks in the party surrounding President Asif Ali Zardari and the summary of Justice (Retd) Didar Hussain Shah for the slot of Chairman NAB was moved, but this time the Prime Minister Gilani had also attached the dissenting note of Leader of Opposition on the candidature of Justice (Retd) Didar Hussain Shah wherein he had doubted his impartiality, as person had twice contested general elections on PPP ticket. Sources in the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz informed TheNation that they would protest against the governments decision, setting aside all rules and regulations and would also take the matter in the apex court. Justice (Retd) Deedar Hussain Shah is likely to assume the charge of his new assignment in next couple of days and it is likely that his appointment as Chairman NAB would also be challenged in a next few days. Sources within PML-N informed that the selection of Chairman NAB was made contrary to the procedure and they would take the matter to the court. It is pertinent to mention here that as per the Supreme Court of Pakistans directives, the Government was bound to appoint Chairman NAB by September 30 but later on the request of the Government 10 more days were given to the Government to fill the vacant seat of Chairman NAB which would expire on Oct 9(today) and this time the Government had fulfilled its commitment. Meanwhile talking to media outside Parliament House Federal Minister for Law and Justice Dr Babar Awan said that they had appointed a person as Chairman NAB on which the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Qaid Mian Nawaz Sharif had expressed confidence when he was facing NAB cases and Justice (Retd) Deedar Hussain Shah was sitting judge of Sindh High Court. To a question, he said that the Government had duly consulted Leader of Opposition for the purpose and his advice was not binding on the Government. He further said that above all Mian Nawaz Sharif had expressed his full confidence on Justice (Retd) Didar Hussain Shah when he was judge Sindh High Court and Mian Nawaz Sharif was facing corruption references there.
