Nawaz facing Catch-22 situation

LAHORE-The biggest suspense at the moment is how Asif Zardari plays ball with PML (N) Quaid Nawaz Sharif in days to come after becoming fully entrenched, safe and secure. The political circles are quite keen to see Asif Zardari's next move to woo back Nawaz Sharif's PML (N) in the coalition led by the PPP. The PPP top leadership is quite confident that it would manage to win back PML (N) at the end of the day. How Nawaz Sharif responds to Zardari's unity calls and will he take the bait this time again and become the part of PPP-led alliance again is also a key question. In the light of this background and perception the political circles watched with great interest the meeting between the Zardari and Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad. Nawaz on Monday called on Zardari, leading a big delegation of party, to congratulate him on becoming the President. The delegation was conspicuous by the presence of Shahbaz Sharif, the Punjab Chief Minister, who must be feeling a bit tense and insecure in the face of threats emanating from some PPP quarters, mainly spearheaded by Punjab Governor Salman Taseer. Meanwhile, tension increased between the two allies in the Punjab in the last couple of days with leaders from both sides locking horns with each other. The PML (N)'s Rana Sanaullah asked the PPP leadership recently to better sit in the Opposition. In the meeting between the heads of PPP and PML (N), Zardari once again asked Sharif to come back to the coalition. The political circles believe that latest contact between the two parties is a good sign and underline desire from both sides to keep a sound working relations in one form or the other The big question before the political circles at the moment is how long Nawaz going to resist Zardari's unity calls and whether in the wake of these renewed calls PML (N) again joins hand with the PPP or continue to sit in the Opposition, asking PPP to follow suit in the Punjab. Some political circles believe that Nawaz could rejoin the coalition government. It is partly the reason why none of the Sharif brothers have openly asked the PPP to quit from the provincial government, they claim. The PML (N) leaders approached by The Nation too are not very sure how things will be settled between the two parties in the end. Most of the PML (N) leaders have no idea what is cooking in the mind of Nawaz and Shahbaz. Nawaz Sharif seems to be in Catch-22 situation here. Returning to coalition government after pulling out in the first place, leveling allegation against Zardari of breaking promises and violating commitments that too written, will be damaging for him politically speaking. Again, the PPP is not in a mood to reinstate deposed judges, especially deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. according to letter and spirit of Murree Declaration and agreements reached between the two allies subsequently. Already, the PML (N) leaders have openly criticised the PPP govt the way it has been inducting the deposed judges in the judiciary. Thus joining the coalition while compromising on its primary demands will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Sharifs. Again, it is not sure how long the PPP govt takes to undo 17th Amendment or repeal 58(2)-B, another demand set by PML (N) leadership before it re-consider the offer to rejoin the party. But in case Nawaz Sharif turns his back on the PPP and do the politics of Opposition, as he announced during his meeting with Zardari, then who knows what turn politics take in the country. The situation could get out of control. It could add to the worries of Sharifs with PPP has nothing to lose at the moment. The biggest worry for PML (N) at the moment is the survival of Punjab government which Governor Punjab is threatening to bring down in case the PML (N) seek to unseat PPP Ministers from the provincial govt. The situation here in the Punjab is quite tense also, with leaders from both sides trading allegations. The PML (N) has already been involved in the number game in the Punjab to secure itself. Its top leadership are even worried as to why some members of Punjab Assembly did not vote for PML (N) despite first committing themselves. As such the presence of Shahbaz Sharif in the meeting, which Nawaz held with Zardari on Monday, is quite symbolic for political circles.
