Imran asks US, Pakistan to rethink terror war strategy

ISLAMABAD Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Imran Khan, has said that US and Pakistan must rethink their war on terror strategy as it is driving an increasing number of moderate middleclass individuals to acts of terror. The PTI Chairman on Sunday criticised the threat of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that a successful terrorist attack on US soil with links to Pakistan would invite serious consequences for Pakistan. If middleclass individuals residing in western societies resort to terror acts, the responsibility lies with the US whose policy has failed to win the hearts and minds of the moderate majority, Imran added. He stated that human lives must be respected irrespective of their nationality, ethnicity or religious inclinations. The concept of collateral damage is alien to fundamental human rights, he said. The present US policy of using force is forcing an increasing number of moderates to join the extremist fringe thus widening the range of threats to US mainland by groups previously not inclined to attack the US, he added. This is a dangerous trend and can only be arrested if there is a strategic shift in the war on terror policy, PTI chief maintained. Imran said that 9/11 attacks were carried out by Saudi nationals with purported links to Arabs who had participated in the US-funded Jihad against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. He was of the saying that instead of dealing with those responsible for the 9/11 attacks, the US war on terror policy pitched the US army and NATO troops against a wide spectrum of Afghan society who considered their country under occupation by US and NATO forces. By forcing the hand of Musharraf to pitch the Pakistan Army against the tribal people in FATA, the US expanded the scope of the war from Afghanistan to Pakistans tribal belt with disastrous consequences for Pakistans internal security and economy, Imran stated. He said that the latest US threat to Pakistan showed the shallowness of the so-called strategic partnership between Pakistan and the US. On one hand the US leadership proclaims that it is in partnership with Pakistan for the long haul but on the other hand a mere failed terror attempt leads to threats against its strategic partner, Imran said. The on-going war in FATA and the increasing tales of loss of innocent lives would continue to fuel the insurgency and propel others to take to violent means, said Imran. The PTI Chief stated that the situation in FATA was desperate. Sending in the Army into North Waziristan would further worsen the internal security situation in Pakistan and in all likelihood lead to a renewed surge of terrorist activities inside Pakistan, he maintained. While the US is concerned about the potential of a threat to their citizens, our policymakers have brazenly followed US dictates that has destroyed our economy and internal security and led to the loss of thousands of innocent lives, Imran added. He stated that the only solution was a major reassessment leading to a change in the policy on the war on terror. He was of the saying that the war had been thrust on the society by a leadership that was only interested in western props to keep itself saddled in power.
