A meeting of the PPP senior leadership was held in the Presidency Monday afternoon presided over by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusaf Raza Gilani. Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar said that the meeting took stock of the overall political situation obtaining in the country with emphasis on the availability of Power, economic situation, the law and order situation and relations with coalition partners. Syed Naveed Qamar, Federal Minister for Water & Power, briefed the meeting on the supply and demand situation of power in the country and the steps underway to meet the energy challenge. Naveed Qamar said that the remedial measures adopted had eased off the power crises by increasing the generation by 4500 MW which had reduced outages. He said that in the long term measures the foundation stone of the countrys biggest 4500 MW hydro Power project- the Bhasha Project would be laid early next week. The Prime Minister gave a briefing on the economic situation and relations with coalition partners. Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Federal Minister for Commerce briefed the meeting on his recent visit to India and the Indian governments agreement to waive its objections against the EUs proposed trade concessions to Pakistan. The President briefed the meeting on the deliberations held on Saturday in a meeting attended by Governor, Chief Minister Sindh and others in the Presidency on the steps being taken by the provincial government of Sindh to implement the Supreme Court verdict in the Suo Moto case about the Karachi situation. Farhatullah Babar said that the President emphasized the need to solve the energy problems on a permanent basis saying that the power situation in the country must be improved and not allowed to degenerate into an issue of power politics. The situation in Balochistan also came under discussion, the spokesperson said.
