Qadri inspired by sermon

RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD - Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), Rawalpindi Number 1, on Monday sent Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, the alleged assassin of late governor Punjab Salman Taseer, to jail on 14-day judicial remand. According to details, Kohsar Police Station Islamabad presented Mumtaz Qadri before the ATC-1 Special Judge, Malik Akram Awan, all of a sudden at almost 10:00 a.m. without any prescribed schedule and pleaded the court that Mumtaz Qadri might be sent to jail as the police had completed investigations from him in Salman Taseers murder case. The judge accepted the plea of Islamabad Police and sent Qadri to Adiala Jail on 14-day judicial remand. Earlier, Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri confessed his crime before the court that he shot Taseer dead at his own will and no other person, party or group was involved in this crime. Islamabad Police also submitted his medical report in the court in which it was revealed that only two minor marks were present on the body of Qadri. The court sought report about these marks from the medical experts. It is pertinent to mention here that after expiry of five-day remand granted by the court earlier on the last hearing, Islamabad Police presented Qadri in the court one day prior to the scheduled date to avoid any protest by his supporters and due to the strategy adopted by police, the activists of different religious parties could not reach the court to express solidarity with him. However, some lawyers gathered outside the court and chanted slogans in Qadris favour. The alleged assassin of Salman Taseer was presented in the court of Mohammad Ali Randhawa, an area magistrate, in Islamabad on Monday, where the killer got his confessional statement recorded under Section 164 of Criminal Procedural Court (CrPC). His thorough medical check up was also conducted at Polyclinic before sending him to Adiala Jail, sources informed The Nation. Earlier, other six colleagues of the alleged killer have got their statements recorded before the magistrate under Section 164 of CrPC. Later, Mumtaz Qadri was brought to the Polyclinic under strict security, where his thorough medical check-up was conducted and the doctors had declared him mentally and physically fit. However, the counsel for the alleged killer, Waheed Anjum, has claimed that during the interrogation police had tortured Mumtaz Qadri. The sources informed The Nation that the top officials of Islamabad Police sent a letter to the Chief Commissioner Islamabad stating that the further investigations into the case should be conducted in the Adiala Jail. Police have informed the district management through a letter that keeping in view the seriousness of the case the possible reaction from religious groups should not be taken lightly. During the movement of Qadri from jail to court any untoward incident is expected, therefore, solid measures should be taken to avoid it. Agencies add: Assassin of governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer, Mumtaz Qadri, has confessed to his crime before the Anti-Terrorism Court and has been sent to Adiala jail on 14-day judicial remand. Mumtaz Qadri, who was led away smiling on Tuesday after gunning down his boss outside an Islamabad coffee shop, appeared in court for a remand hearing following his official confession. He has said he killed in the name of religion because the governor of Punjab province wanted to reform blasphemy laws. He said he was inspired by the sermon of a cleric. He has recorded his confessional statement for the murder... in which he said that he killed Salmaan Taseer on his own and there was no involvement of any religious or militant organisation, senior police official Haroon Joya said. Qadri was not due in court until Tuesday, but officials said he was brought to a closed hearing in Rawalpindi a day early after officially confessing to the crime, infuriating defence lawyers who said they were not invited. The move was to avoid arguments from the defence, defence lawyer Malik Waheed Anjum said. None of our lawyers could attend the court because we didnt know about the proceedings. But Joya said: They did not summon the defence lawyers because they did not feel the need. We did not deceive the defence, because we presented him in the court according to law. At his last court appearance, Qadri was showered with rose petals and a loud crowd of supporters at the courthouse forced the relocation of the hearing to Islamabad.
