SC orders reinstatement of 478 SSGPL employees

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered reinstatement of 478 employees of the Sui Southern Gas Pipelines Limited (SSGPL) from the date of their termination but with no back date benefits. A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by CJ Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Ch Ijaz Ahmed and Justice Jawwad S Khawaja heard the contempt of court appeals filed by the employees of SSGPL. The bench ordered to implement the order within one week and report to the Registrar Office of the Supreme Court. Counsel of the SSGPL argued before the court that the apex court in its judgement in 2002 reinstated them and did not order back date benefits to these employees but they had been demanding it. He said that the gas companies were already over-staffed. He said the company had reinstated these employees and there was no issue of contempt of court. The appellants were represented by Akram Shaikh, Sayed Iftikhar Hussain Gillani and Shoab Shaheen advocates. They argued the SSGPL reinstated these employees from the date of judgement of the apex court in 2002, however the reinstatement should be implemented from the date of their termination. The employees filed a contempt of court appeal in the Supreme Court with reinstatement from 1996, they said. The court ordered reinstatement of these employees from the date of their termination, however they would not be entitled for back date benefits. These employees were terminated from services during 1996 to 1998.
