Lawyer of Mumbai attack co-accused shot dead

MUMBAI (Agencies) An Indian lawyer who was defending one of the key accused in the ongoing 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks trial, was shot dead on Thursday late in the evening, according to media reports. Police said that some unidentified persons, pretending as clients barged into Shahid Azmis office in Taximens Colony in Kurla, a north-eastern Mumbai suburb just before 9 pm and opened fire at him. He was shot at in his office. We have to ascertain the identity of the assailants. We have some clues, said Deven Bharti, an additional commissioner of police. He was immediately rushed to Rajawadi Hosiptal in Ghatkopar where he was declared dead. Shahid Azmi came to the limelight after he began handling the 7/11 Mumbai blast case and other terror related cases in which Muslim youths were detained. He was handling these cases as defence lawyer on behalf of Jamiat Ulema Maharashtra. His petition filed on behalf of Jamiat Ulema challenging the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act is pending for judgment in Supreme Court. Besides handling the cases of the accused in Malegaon 2008 blasts and arms haul case in which Muslim youths from Malegaon and Aurangabad were detained, Shahid was also representing Fahim Ansari, an accused of being a member of Lashkar-e-Taiba, charged with preparing the groundwork to help the perpetrators of the Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks.
