Taliban threaten to kill hostages as talks fail

HANGU - The alleged Taliban militants on Friday threatened to kill all the 29 hostages if the government authorities do not release their seven companions arrested during the siege of Dawaba Police Station during Wednesday midnight. However, the police officials denied receiving such threats. The threat came soon after the six-member committee announced failure of efforts for reconciliation between the government officials and the Taliban militants in Hangu on Friday. The committee comprising mostly JUI-F had held a meeting with the members of Taliban militants here. The talks failed when the militants' demand for release of the seven persons arrested on Wednesday was rejected by the civil and police authorities. Soon after the failure of reconciliatory efforts, Taliban threatened to kill all the hostages. The alleged militants also claimed to have occupied Naryab Dam near Hangu town and made hostages several other employees. The Taliban militants also took positions over the tops of mountains and other important places. They threatened to kill all the hostages if the government fails to release the seven hostages by Saturday morning. Such threats on the part of Taliban militants resulted in widespread unrest amongst common people of Hangu who, fearing military action, are planning to leave the area. On the other hand, the police and Frontier Constabulary joint forces continued search operation on the third consecutive day (Friday). Deputy Superintendent Police Mr Shakir Ullah Bangash told the media that on the third day of the search operation, the security forces netted six suspected persons raising strength of the arrested persons to 29. The police force also succeeded in recovering huge quantity of modern and sophisticated weapons from the arrested militants. The Jirga members informed that Taliban militants besides demanding release of their accomplices were also insisting on pullout of troops from the area.
