Bashir Bilour escapes bid on life; five killed

PESHAWAR - NWFP Senior Minister and Awami National Party leader Bashir Ahmad Bilour survived an attempt on his life, however, five persons including two women were killed while five others sustained injuries in a grenade attack on Wednesday, police said. The unknown miscreants attacked Bashir Bilour on Wednesday afternoon when he was on way from Sarki Gate to Namakmandi, the most congested and active locality of the city. Bashir Ahmad Bilour after his survival was forced by his well-wishers and bodyguards to board a vehicle, while the attackers entered a house for shelter. As per details, the NWFP Senior Minister accompanied by Nazims and other representatives and officials of local government institutions visited the area for inspecting development and civic activities. Aftr completing the inspection in Sarki Gate he was entering Namakmandi, when the miscreants made an attempt against his life with hand grenades. One of the attackers slipped thus providing a chance to Bashir Bilour's bodyguards to foil the attempt. After brief exchange of fire the attackers entered a house where they forced the occupants to give them a shelter. In the meanwhile the police force cordoned off the area and opened fire against the militants. However, the militants hurled hand grenades against the police personnel. One of the grenades landed in a house killing two persons. After some time, the assailants blew themselves up with some explosive material. The identity of both the killed persons was yet to be determined. The Capital City Police Chief Mr Sifwat Ghayoor confirmed the killing of five persons including two women, two bombers and one passerby. Four persons were injured. The injured included Malik Noor Rehman Nazim Union Council Zargarabad who survived in the tragic suicide attack at Asamayee Gate Qaissakhwani on January 27, 2007. Senior Police Officer Malik Saad along with DSP Khan Razziq and two Union Council Nazims were also killed in that attack. Meanwhile, the NWFP Governor, Owais Ahmed Ghani strongly condemned the attack on the provincial Senior Minister, Bashir Ahmad Bilour and termed it an act of cowardice. He contacted Bashir Ahmad Bilour on the telephone and enquired after his health and expressed his good wishes on his safety. Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao and Member of Provincial Assembly Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao also condemned the tragic incident and expressed deep concern over the killing of innocent people. They also expressed heartfelt sympathies with the injured and prayed for their early recovery.
