Poor's plea falls on deaf ears

KARACHI - An old peasant observing hunger strike in protest against a landlord died Sunday. As per details, Wali Dad, 70, resident of Essa Khaskheli, District Sanghar, and his family were on hunger strike for 20 days against the injustices of an influential landlord belonging to PML-F, Waryam Faqir Khaskheli. According to the deceaseds family, the companions of the said landlord threatened them to call off their protest or get ready to face dire consequences. They further said that deceased Wali Dad felt pain in his chest after morning prayer and was rushed to the Civil Hospital but he breathed his last while in the way. After the incident, the bereaved family brought the dead body of the Wali Dad at the Press Club and staged a sit-in. Meanwhile, Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri, Law Minister Ayaz Soomro and Minister for Katchi Abadies Engineer Rafiq Advocate reached the camp and expressed their grievance with the bereaved family. They also announced Rs 0.1 million for deceaseds family. They assured that a judicial inquiry into the matter would be ordered and stern action would be taken against the said landlord. Later, the protesters called off the hunger strike and took the dead body to their village. Earlier, various political and civil society activists also met the members of the bereaved family and assured their full support to the victims.
