Next two days critical for S. Punjab

MULTAN The water level is mounting in Chenab River as the floodwaters passing through this area crossed 0.3 million cusecs mark on Thursday. Irrigation officials said this spell would last till Friday and then will start receding as water discharge at Head Trimmu has already dipped to 268,000 cusecs from 323,000 cusecs. Corps Commander Multan Lt-Gen Shafqaat Ahmad has declared next two days critical for South Punjab. He told the journalists the current flood would cross South Punjab till August 16 while another one might pass through this area by the end of ongoing month. Meanwhile, the Army jawans and irrigation officials have been deployed at all embankments. The Sources concerned informed this scribe that the Akbar embankment is under intense pressure of floods and it started eroding at two spots which were immediately repaired by the army jawans and irrigation workers. The residents of the adjoining areas are also rendering services duties on the flood banks and dykes voluntarily at embankments. Meanwhile, the water flow in River Chenab at Head Muhammadwala was recorded as 3,00,000 cusecs while more than 40,000 cusecs of water was added to the river from TP Link Canal, thus increasing the total water flow to more than 3,40,000 cusecs.
