LAHORE - The PML-N has named 10 candidates for upcoming Senate elections in the Party Parliamentary Board meeting held at Raiwind here on Thursday. The nominees include Raja Zafarul Haq, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Pervaiz Rasheed, Zafar Ali Shah, Mushahidullah Khan, Prof. Sajid Mir, Najma Hameed, Saeeda Noshad, Malik Shuja and Saeeda Mushtaq. PML-N chief Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif presided over the Parliamentary Board meeting that was attended by PML-N President and Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq, Opposition leader in National Assembly Ch. Nisar Ali Khan, Secretary General Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Zafar Ali Shah, Mushahidullah Khan. A large number of members of Parliamentary Board, central leaders and Ministers were present on the occasion. After the meeting, PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif made formal announcement about the nominees of Senate polls. Giving details, he said that meeting considered 99 applications submitted to contest the elections of the Upper House of the Parliament. 'We contemplated each and every application and finalised 10 names for the forthcoming polls', he added. 'On general seats, Raja Zafarul Haq, Pervaiz Rashid, Syed Zafar Ali Shah, Mushahidullah Khan have been given tickets for Senate'. From Punjab, Prof Sajid Mir on technocrat seat and Najma Hameed on women seat have been awarded party tickets. 'Zakia Shahnawaz will be covering candidate of Najma Hameed. Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and Saeeda Noshad will contest from NWFP. While Malik Shuja and Saeeda Mushtaq have been awarded Senate tickets from Islamabad', Shahbaz added. While,speaking to newsmen, PML-N chief Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif said that PML-N had always remained side by side with lawyers movement from day first for the reinstatement of deposed judges. However, he expressed regret about the attitude of lawyers, saying PML-N was not taken into confidence regarding Long March and sit-in announced by legal fraternity. He said that before his departure to London, Supreme Court Bar Association Ali Ahmed Kurd contacted him. 'But later Kurd made unilateral announcement about the sit-in'. Regardless of this, he said that PML-N would make final announcement about sit-in after contact to be initiated by lawyers. He denounced the govt for not taking political parties on board regarding investigation carried out about Mumbai attacks. So much so Punjab govt was also kept in the dark, he added. When asked about negotiations with PPP-led govt, he was of the view that door of negotiations was never shut off in politics. He also underscored the need for resumption of Vajpayee era Pak-India dialogue to resolve Kashmir issue.
