Section 144 imposed in parts of NWFP as crackdown continues

After the government's clampdown on the lawyers' long march in Sindh and Punjab, the crackdown has also been launched in NWFP. The section 144 was imposed in Charsadda, Nowshehra and Abbottabad. In Abbottabad, DCO Syed Zahir-ul-Islam promulgated the section 144. Pakistan Muslim League-N UC Nazim Haji Javed Khan was arrested. Meanwhile, police continued to arrest political leaders and lawyers in Peshawar. PML-N secretary general Zafar Iqbal Jhagra, Jamaat-e-Islami's Bashir Ahmed and Sabir Hussain Awan have been put under house arrest today. Police conducted a raid at the residence of Jamaat-e-Islami NWFP Ameer Siraj-ul-Haq, however he was not at home. PML-N leaders Khadim Ali and Abdus Sattar were taken into custody while secretary general Peshawar High Court Bar, Essa Khan was arrested. In Mansehra, protest rallies and display of arms were banned under section 144. Police arrested PML-N city general secretary Inayat-ur-Rehman and Pakistan Tehreek Insaf leader Niaz Khan. In Nowshehra, JI leader Zafar-ul-Islam Farooqui and over 70 political workers have been arrested. The president of Peshawar High Court Bar Abdul Lateef Afridi was put under house arrest.
